This weekend PHD will hold our own “South Dakota Open Period” running through games from this past winter looking at some of the best talent in the state and getting some of their highlights out on social media.
Today we give you our list of guards college coaches should know, in South Dakota’s junior class. Players that would be competing on 17u teams with some of the best teams on several different circuits.
Top Six Prospects
Tyler Feldkamp of Sioux Falls Roosevelt (5’11). Tyler is the top point guard prospect in the state and the 3rd ranked prospect overall. Tyler is being hotly recruited as a football prospect but his physical abilities as a basketball player will result in basketball opportunities as well if Tyler were to pursue that interest (over football). Tyler’s speed with the ball and defending the ball separates him.
Connor Libis of Dell Rapids-St. Mary (5’9). A top shooter in the grade, Libis is a big number producer but he’s also shown to be an excellent ball handler and creator as a 16u talent. Libis is ranked 7th overall in the state. The Libis speed in change of direction and his quickness into the pull-up and jumper off a screen rank with the best.
Tyce Ortman of Canistota (5’11). A top 25 prospect in the state of South Dakota is usually a guarantee of some type of scholarship offer from one of the D2 or NAIA programs. Some of the fastest hands in the state and one of the deepest stances on the ball all around. Also, Ortman’s lift on his jumper is tough to get hand to.
Colin Rentz of Dell Rapids (5’11). Colin is the top point guard prospect in Class A basketball for the 2021 class and a top ten player/prospect in the class overall. What has caught our eye about Colin is his ability to use either hand at a high level. Finishing, handling, attacking either direction, and moving the ball, Rentz uses both hands as well as any guard.
Isaac Sumption of Leola-Frederick (5’11). A player that made one of the best impressions this winter, Sumption is a top 15 player prospect in the class. Sumption has some of the best feet in his class and his leadership with his actions makes him a leader that will draw football and basketball interest.
Kelton Vincent of Sioux Valley (5’11). Top 25 level prospect that has earned a lot of respect for his defensive prowess and regular defensive attack. He’s an outstanding defender on the ball plus his jumper has continually progressed. The release of Vincent’s shooting touch is as quick as they come forcing as a tight of a closeout as one would need.
Next Six
Jakob Dobney of Vermillion (6’0).
Beau Donovan of Red Cloud (6’0).
Joe Kolbeck of Brandon Valley (6’0).
Tucker Large of Sioux Falls Roosevelt (5’10)
Jackson McCormick of Sioux Falls Roosevelt (5’11).
Wyatt Olson of Jones County (5’11).
