The 17u seniors-to-be. It’s their time, regardless if they can take the court this 17u season or not. College coaches, we ask that you please check their video and get to learn what they players can do.
Today we give you our list of power forwards and centers college coaches should know, in South Dakota’s junior/2021 class. Players that would be competing on 17u teams with some of the best teams on several different circuits.
Top Six Prospects
Reece Burckhard of Aberdeen Central (6’8). After diving into a few different videos of Reece I have a feeling that he could open a lot of eyes if the 17u games are played this summer. He is quicker off his feet than a lot of bigs and if you have seen him streaking down the field to catch passes you will notice the agility. Add in the ability to score with each hand as well as turn over each shoulder and make plays comfortably and you have a low post prospect colleges would enjoy working with. ????
Hayden Muirhead of Sioux Falls O’Gorman (6’6). Diving into the video even more we think Hayden is surely a top ten college prospect in this class and let’s not stop there. He has the type of agility, quickness of his feet, and speed as a 6-foot-6 player to be a full scholarship guy. This is one of the most agile bigs in the state and he could surely crack the top 5-6 this summer with continued work and of course the ability to play in front of people this summer.
Matthew Mors of Yankton (6’7). Mors is committed to Wisconsin already so it’s not college coaches that he needs to impress. The thing people will be watching is what kind of impact will Mors make when he gets to Madison and how does he compare to some of the other nationally ranked prospects around the Midwest.
Carter Nelson of Dell Rapids (6’7). The reason so many schools have continued to keep an eye on Nelson is the way he runs as well as his length as a 6-foot-7, 200 pound power forward. Nelson has an agility to him at his size that not many have and if he can learn to finish at a higher percentage and become a more consistent player doors will be opened.
Jay Jurgens of Brandon Valley (6’7). Jurgens has good timing as a shot blocker not just on his lift to the release but also moving over from his man to the support position. He’s become a better finisher using both his right and his left hand and the percentage at which he finished in both JV and varsity this year hovered around 60 percent.
Kelby VanDerWerff of Platte-Geddes (6’5). For me the value that Kelby truly adds is his ability as a face-up four man. If he continues to improve as a shooter teams may even use him as a three as Kelby is much closer to a three than a five not just at the college level but playing with his high school team. Led the Panthers to a 20-3 season.
Next Six
Max Herber of Dell Rapids-St. Mary (6’4).
Gray Imery of Aberden Roncalli (6’4).
Jacob Messmer of Wessington Springs (6’5).
Eddie Meylor of Sioux Falls O’Gorman (6’6).
Gradee Sherman of Viborg-Hurley (6’4).
Noah Van Donkersgoed of Sioux Falls Christian (6’4)
