And as a top 150 level player nationally, that offer will come to Tschetter soon. Prep Hoops caught up with Will to chat on recruiting, his high school season, and plans for improvement with the Minnesota Heat.
Right now we should be talking about how Will and the Minnesota Heat has had an excellent spring but instead, we wait.
“It would be great if we were to get any time at all to play with our 17u team but it’s kind of bitter sweet,” Tschetter said. “You are able to get out and work on your craft but you can’t go out and compete with your buddies.
“I am super excited for the Heat. Our core is really good and we all know each other really well. I’ve been texting with the guys a lot as we are really excited to get back together. I know our goal as a team is to not lose. We are super competitive, and I really hate losing. So that is the goal.”
Instead Tschetter is working to improve his offensive game. Will led the state in scoring with 34.4 points a game but there is always chances to improve.
“I have been working a lot on my ball handling for sure, and I am constantly getting up various types of shots and staying consistent with that. I’ve also been spending a lot of tie doing a lot of footwork stuff.”
The Tigers of Stewartville went 25-6 this year before falling to Caledonia in the section championship game. It was a much better season than most expected from the Tigers.
“I would say things went better than expected,” Will said. “We have some great players on our team but with the schedule we were playing against all the tough teams from our area, I was knew it was going to be a challenge. I felt we did a really good job and exceeded expectations.”
As far as recruiting goes Will has an offer list that includes Colorado State, Northern Iowa, Loyola Chicago, North Dakota State, Santa Clara, James Madison, Wyoming, Appalachian State, and others. He’s going through virtual visits with teams regularly.
“The virtual visits kind of vary,” Will said. “With some of the schools that have offered me they go more in depth with the campus and then they go in-depth basketball wise. They show how I would fit with their style of play.
“The bigger schools, for example Oregon State did a virtual visit with me as well, they show mostly the campus and athletic facilities. I’ve done virtual visits with Loyola, Toledo, Oregon State, Arkansas, and Santa Clara.”
The teams that have been in contact with Will the most in the past year have likely been NDSU, Loyola, Northern Iowa, and Colorado State. The Rams Head Coach Niko Medved showed at a big playoff game – along with assistant Dave Thorson – and immediately the Prep Hoops inbox blew up.
“I really like the coaching staff there,” Will said. “Our relationship is pretty strong there. They have done a really job recruiting Minnesota kids including David Roddy and Jacob Jannissen. I have a pretty good relationship with them.”
Northern Iowa is the second closest division one school to Will’s Stewartville home and the Panther staff has taken advantage of the proximity.
“They have been to Stewartville likely six or seven times in the past year and I have likely have been down there four times,” Will said of UNI. “I really like their staff. I went to two games and I know quite a few of the players there including Nathan Heise Nathan Heise 6'5" | PG Lake City | 2020 State #266 Nation MN who I played against. I have a really good overall feel for them and how they play, and things like that.”
