The Opelika-Auburn area is known to have some of the most elite basketball players in Alabama. Here is a list of the top five players that have captured my interest.
Tae Burton – LaFayette, 6’2” Guard
Burton was a guard that stayed busy in the lane for the 31-1 LaFayettte Bulldogs. He finished with 15.3 PPG, 4.1 RPG, and 3.5 assists per game for the 2019-2020 season and selected as the O-A News’ Small School Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Burton is the whole package as a guard. Whenever the Bulldogs needed someone to step up and take over the game, Burton was that guy. He is a relentless driver to the rim and creates shots for himself. He also has the ability to knock down deep jumpers from the 3 point line. Burton does a great job looking for his teammates on the floor and showing that his basketball IQ is the best on the floor. He has committed to play for Shelton State when he graduates.
Zameron Boozer Zameron Boozer 6'8" | PF Lanett | 2020 State AL – Lanett, 6’9” Forward
Boozer’s dominant down low present led his team to the state championship for the fourth time in five seasons. For his senior season, he averaged 14 PPG, 9.0 RPG, and 2.0 assists per game. Boozer is one of the best shot blockers in the state, making guards hesitant to come in the paint. His powerful drop step makes it hard for players to guard him one on one in the post. Towering over players at 6’9,” Boozer athleticism separates him from everyone on the floor. He has committed to take his talents to the Sunshine State to play for Jacksonville University.
Corey Boston Corey Boston 5'10" | PG Lafayette | 2020 State AL – LaFayette, 5’11″ Guard
Boston averaged 13.7 PPG, 4.9 RPG, and 6.0 assists per game. He is a left-handed shifty point guard looking to hunt the paint. Boston is not afraid to step up defensively against an opponent taller than him. He gets the crowd going, and his team feeds off his energy on the floor every game. Boston is the floor general, sees the floor, and drops dimes. He has signed to play for Snead State when he graduates.
Francis Okeyia – Springwood, 6’5″ Forward
Okeyia is a player that uses his speed to separate himself from others. He makes his teammates on the floor look good. Okeyia can push the ball down the court like a point guard, which makes him scary to guard in the open floor. Watching him record a double-double is like watching a highlight reel, and he ended the Wildcat’s season with 19.6 PPG, 11.0 RPG, and 6.7 assists per game.
Tyrek Turner – Tallassee, 6’6″ Forward
Turner averaged 13.2 PPG, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks per game and led his team to history by surpassing the 22-game win mark. He is a big man that is athletic and can run the floor consistently, making it easy for his team to create opportunities on a fast break. Frazier is very skilled facing the basket as he can knock down the midrange jumper. He also brings defenders out of the paint to space out the floor. Frazier finished his senior season out with a bang at Tallassee. He has committed to play for Southern Union when he graduates.
