Right now, we’re going to look at how the rankings are broken down by position. Here’s a look at part two of the guards rankings, looking at some of the power forwards and centers in the class.
#10 Judah Egbo Judah Egbo 6'7" | C Life Christian Academy | 2023 State VA | 6’7” | Jamestown (#26 Overall)
Egba is a guy who is showing great improvement over the past few seasons and had a breakout year at Jamestown helping them turn the program around. He’s a mobile big man that can run the floor, he gets off his feet quickly and has good timing as a shot blocker and he can catch and finish a lot of stuff above the rim in the paint. He’s shown improvement in his hands and his post game, and if he continues to get better he’ll be on the radar of college coaches in no time.
#9 Wendell Tomlin Wendell Tomlin 6'6" | PF Church Hill Academy | 2022 State VA | 6’6” | Benedictine (#25 Overall)
Tomlin had an up and down year as did most of the Benedictine team, but his skill set at his size is one of the best in the class. The 6’6” forward is thin but he’s very long and very mobile, he shoots it extremely well off the catch from deep and he’s able to put it on the deck in limited dribbles and get to spots to make shots as well. He’s a versatile defender and hard worker who rebounds well and is a walking mismatch offensively.
#8 Arbriel Winfield Arbriel Winfield 6'7" | PF LC Bird | 2022 VA | 6’7” | LC Bird (#23 Overall)
When it comes to potential, Winfield has as much as anyone in the class yet he’s still relatively unknown because he’s still working to put it all together. At 6’7”, he’s a natural athlete that rebounds and finishes well above the rim, he’s pretty skilled on the perimeter with the ability to make shots from deep and he has all of the tools to be a versatile defender as well. In a year or two, remember that I told you that Winfield will be something special because he has all of the tools and is at a program that does a great job developing talent.
#7 Houston Emory Houston Emory 6'10" | C Blue Ridge | 2022 State VA | 6’10” | Blue Ridge (#15 Overall)
The Pennsylvania native announced over the summer that he would reclassify to the 2022 class, however his year didn’t go as planned as he missed much of the season with a stress fracture in his back. However, Emory already holds a few offers with what he’s done in the past, and he’s still got a ton of room to improve as well. He’s a blue collar big that can do the dirty work in the post, is pretty athletic and mobile at his size and as he continues to fill out he should be a big time paint presence moving forward.
#6 David Onanina David Onanina 6'6" | PF Bishop O'Connell | 2022 State VA | 6’6” | Bishop O’Connell (#14 Overall)
Onanina isn’t the tallest guy in the paint, but he’s physical and athletic and plays much taller than he is. He plays with a great motor and intensity on both ends and is a guy who can man the middle as far as protecting the paint and he rebounds at a very high rate both in and out of his area. He’s very mobile and gets up and down the court well, he’s a strong and athletic finisher and can outplay guys much bigger than him.
#5 Greg Melvin Greg Melvin 6'7" | PF Cape Henry | 2022 State VA | 6’7” | Cape Henry (#13 Overall)
Melvin is a very intriguing prospect for the next level because he has great physical and athletic tools that he uses to dominate in the paint, and he has a budding skill set that continues to improve moving forward. He’s a monster on the glass and he plays with a great motor on the offensive end where he can rebound and get points without plays being ran for him, he has good hands and good lift and he’s worked to be able to stretch the floor better. He has great tools to be a versatile defender moving forward and if he continues to develop he’ll see a lot of college coaches on his radar.
#4 Keyontae Lewis Keyontae Lewis 6'7" | PF LC Bird | 2022 State VA | 6’7” | LC Bird (#12 Overall)
Lewis is arguably the most intriguing prospect in Bird’s very deep 2022 class, and the fact that he’s young for his age and wears a size 18 shoe makes you think that he’s going to continue to grow moving forward. Lewis a very big kid but he’s dropped some weight and continues to shed baby fat, and he’s surprisingly quick for his size in the post that allows him to get by guys and fight around box outs. He has good hands and good footwork, he has great touch out to the elbows and he’s extremely active and physical in the paint allowing him to score it in bunches around the basket.
#3 David Solomon III David Solomon III 6'6" | C VA Academy | 2023 State VA | 6’6” | Lake Braddock (#10 Overall)
Soloman is a big man with great physical and athletic tools that are well beyond his years and he plays with a great motor that makes him very tough to match up with and stop throughout the course of the game. He’s a guy who is all over the rim whether it’s rebounding on both ends, protecting the rim where he has great timing and fearlessness challenging opponents and he’s a guy who absolutely punishes the rim when he is in the lane. He’s extremely mobile and able to run the floor and he’s very strong as he’s able to get physical and absorb contact, and he still has room to improve as well.
#2 Jaden Daughtry Jaden Daughtry 6'6" | SF Benedictine College Prep | 2022 VA | 6’5” | Benedictine (#9 Overall)
Daughtry dealt with some injuries throughout the year, however when he was on the court you could see a big difference in the level of play for the Cadets with a viable go-to option on the floor. A guy who is chock full of potential and still has room to improve and possibly move onto the wing full time if he develops correctly, he’s a walking mismatch with his versatility on the offensive end and a guy that no one likes to match up with. He plays with a good motor and intensity on both ends of the floor, he’s a strong and athletic forward that can play through traffic and above the rim and he has a base skill set on the perimeter that includes the ability to make set shots and drive in straight lines that is improving every day.
#1 Maliq Brown Maliq Brown 6'8" | PF Blue Ridge | 2022 State #123 Nation VA | 6’8” | Blue Ridge (#2 Overall)
Brown is starting to make his mark on the national recruitment scene as he picked up offers from he likes of Georgetown and TCU since the season ended. The sophomore big man really progressed through the season earning a spot in the starting lineup and becoming one of their most consistent players with his great hands, athleticism and ability to finish through traffic. There isn’t much very sexy about him as far as flash or crazy moves but he knows his game and he’s extremely productive within it. He’s a two way impact guy who has room to improve but is already on his way to being a highly coveted prospect at his size and I only anticipate that his production level continues to grow with time.
