Here’s a look at some of the players to watch in 2020-2021:
Will Obioha, Grand Forks Red River
Obioha is arguably the most talented player in the EDC heading into his senior year. He missed a big chunk of his junior year after helping lead the Roughriders to the state tournament each of the last two seasons. At his best, he’s a two-way force who can get to the rim, make plays off the bounce, defend multiple positions and wreak havoc in the passing lanes. Look for him to have a big senior season.
Carson Hegerle, West Fargo
Hegerle had a solid, but unspectacular sophomore season in which he averaged 10 points and four assists for the Packers. He’s a big, athletic combo-guard who can defend, make plays in transition and get to the rim. If he improves as an outside shooter, he’s got a shot to be one of the elite players in the EDC the next two seasons.
Jah’Heem Leake, West Fargo Sheyenne
Leake has all the physical potential to be a double-double machine inside and he showed flashes of that ability during his junior season. As he gains experience and picks up on the technical and schematic points of the game, his impact will continue to go up because he’s big, athletic and can rebound and finish at a high level.
Luke Loberg, Fargo North
Loberg is one of many young talented athletes in the Fargo North pipeline. The 6-foot-3 sophomore forward put up modest numbers last season, averaging five points and five rebounds but he showed the ability to finish inside, space the floor with his shooting, rebound on both ends of the floor and defend. The Spartans are graduating a bulk of its perimeter core, so expect Loberg to be heavily featured.
Patrick Bath, Fargo Shanley
Bath got off to a hot start in his freshman season with the Deacons and showed throughout the season that he’s got immense potential. He’s big, athletic and skilled especially for a 6-foot-8 15-year-old. If he can sustain the kind of production he had in the first half of the year over a full season and continue to develop physically, he’s got a shot to be dominant.
