Continue ReadingThe recent postponement of the Spring Grassroots season has given me ample time to review some players that I had limited access to during the high school season. After going over their numbers and reviewing film, several players who flew under the radar last year, deserve recognition for their season, and certainly should be evaluated closely once gameplay resumes.
Kyree Hayes Kyree Hayes 6'2" | SG Cheyenne | 2021 State NV 6’2 SG Cheyenne (#50) – Quiet as kept, Hayes was really the Robin to Glenn Taylor Glenn Taylor 6'5" | SF AZ Compass Prep | 2021 State #162 Nation AZ ’s Batman for the Desert Shields this season. He was a consistent two-player, that showed he could knock down shots and defend his yard. He makes plays and can be used both on and off the ball. Cheyenne is an early favorite for 4A contender, so Hayes’s contributions will be integral if they plan on having a special season.
Jackson Williams Jackson Williams 6'2" | SF Faith Lutheran | 2021 State NV 6’2 SG Faith Lutheran (#39) – Williams is the prototypical player that will never hurt you when he’s on the floor. He filled so many roles for the Crusaders last season that it’s easy to take his production for granted. Within two possesions don’t be surprised to see Williams bring the ball up the court, spot up and knock down a 3, and then turn around and pick up the opposing team’s offensive threat.
Lucas Walker Lucas Walker 5'11" | 155 lbs | PG Moapa Valley | 2021 State NV 5’11 PG Moapa Valley (#44) – In case you weren’t watching, Walker showed up and showed out last year. The PG put up monster numbers averaging 21 and 6 per game. He brings a handle, and creative passing ability every night. Walker is an all-around diamond who can stuff the stat sheet, evident by a 32pt 5reb 6as 4st game against Sunrise Mountain.
Lowell Francis Chan Lowell Francis Chan 6'6" | SF Sierra Vista | 2021 State NV 6’4 SF Sierra Vista (#55) – It wasn’t a great year from SV as they failed to capture a league victory. Don’t let that distract you from Chan’s contributions however. Dude straight up balled. He showed he can step out and knock down 3’s as well as score gritty buckets in the paint.
Joseph Summers Joseph Summers 5'11" | PG Carson City | 2021 State NV 5’11 PG Carson (#37) – Physically, he’s not much to look at, but I urge you to take a look at him. Summers balls. I saw him in the Summer and he impressed. He then carried his play over into the high school season. Carson didn’t exactly set the world on fire, however it wasn’t due to his lack of production. He had 37 in a win over Colfax and threw up 32 and 10 in a 3 point defeat against Antelope.
Kobe Kelley Kobe Kelley 5'10" | PG Lincoln Co | 2021 State NV 5’10 PG Lincoln Co (#74) – Kelly deserves to be on this list. Lincoln made a run to the 2A semis and Kelly was a big part of a dynamic 1-2 punch. He can change the scoreboard with his scoring, or run the offense and distribute. Kelly had 12 games this year with at least 10 points and 5 assists.
