NYC PSAL: Juniors who are ready to play DI

New York City’s Public School Athletic League has repeatedly shown off seniors who would continue to play basketball in college. Every year, there are a handful of juniors who already have shown enough potential to be courted by NCAA Division I teams. Today, we take a look at 9 players who have shown enough in their third year of high school to garner interest from the top division of college basketball.

[player_tooltip player_id="945515" first="Khalil" last="Brantley"] | Boys and Girls

The junior point guard out of Boys and Girls has done nothing but impress in his junior year. Every game this season, Brantley would take the game into his own hands, and dictate everything. This year in regular season play, Brantley averaged 34.1 points per game, 9.2 rebounds per game, and 4.4 assists per game. Standing out as the best junior and possibly the best overall player in the PSAL, Brantley has already received offers from schools such as Creighton and Seton Hall, whose programs would send many to the pro leagues.

[player_tooltip player_id="945527" first="Dior" last="Davis"] | Murry Bergtraum

[player_tooltip player_id="945527" first="Dior" last="Davis"] came into junior with high expectations after a monster sophomore season, where he averaged over 30 points per game and included a huge 42 point playoff performance. This year, Davis yet again blew again expectations, even though the team around him improved. Davis averaged well over a triple-double with 26.4 points, 17.7 rebounds, and 15.8 assists per game. Davis is a prospect that screams DI, from his athleticism to his 92 total free throw attempts, all of which were converted.

[player_tooltip player_id="945531" first="Alex" last="Mclain"] | August Martin

Out of August Martin High School, [player_tooltip player_id="945531" first="Alex" last="Mclain"] has figured out how to use his size to his advantage. He averaged 30 points and 20.1 rebounds per game while being one of the league’s best rim protectors. Mclain has mastered the post up, and has proved himself to be a formidable rim protector, calling anywhere four feet within the basket his home. Martin has also shown playmaking potential, averaging 7.4 assists, proving that he has some guard in him.

Jahdoh Jerome | Townsend Harris

Jahdoh Jerome blew away any previous expectation of him, almost doubling offensive production from last season to 23.1 points per game. Jerome also had very good court vision and basketball IQ, and proves it with almost 7 assists per game. Where Jerome’s value lies is in his shot. Jerome is a knockdown shooter from the three and cannot be left alone, scoring almost half his points with the triple.

[player_tooltip player_id="945526" first="Steven" last="Turner"] | South Bronx Prep

[player_tooltip player_id="945526" first="Steven" last="Turner"] is a walking swiss army knife. In game, you can see him literally do it all. Turner can pick up the best offensive player on defense, be the vocal leader of his team, be the clutch shooter, the everyday scorer, the tenacious rebounder and the flashy playmaker. Turner is the kind of player who can do whatever is asked of him if it would help his team win, which college coaches crave.

[player_tooltip player_id="773441" first="Jaquan" last="Carlos"] | Thomas Jefferson

[player_tooltip player_id="773441" first="Jaquan" last="Carlos"] has been active in varsity basketball since his freshman year, and has always been a scorer. This season, Carlos scored the most he has ever scored, with 26.7 points to go along with 4.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists. Carlos has long demonstrated his ability to score from everywhere on the court, including off the dribble, the three, and in traffic, while he always has the ability to get under people in the paint and draw the foul.

Cameron Sweeny | Murry Bergtraum

Cameron Sweeney contains something colleges have always never had enough of-- height. The towering Sweeney led the entire City in rebounds per game with 22.1, outpacing the next highest ([player_tooltip player_id="945531" first="Alex" last="Mclain"]) by 2. Sweeney only averaged 8.6 points per game, but when in such a powerful position to score, Sweeney’s production could quadruple when the ball bounces his way.

[player_tooltip player_id="945530" first="Randy" last="Crosby"] | Washington Heights

[player_tooltip player_id="945530" first="Randy" last="Crosby"] has put on an impressive shooting performance throughout the year. Once Crosby has the ball in his hands, it seems only natural for the ball to end up in the hoop. With an impressive shooting record and his ability to finish at the rim, Crosby has the ability to score anywhere against anyone, which is a bonus at every level of basketball.
