The 252 areas has quite the talent pool, especially when it comes to high school hoops. Here's a look at some of the top seniors from the area in 2019-20.

MVP: Guard [player_tooltip player_id="833082" first="Justin" last="Wright"] - Farmville Central

Wright was a leader in more ways than one for the Jaguars, particularly with his ability to defend any position and play with and without the ball on the offensive end. He’s a player with a nice feel for the game in all situations, especially when it comes to creating in isolation. He’s a solid defender in isolation as well and was responsible for defending [player_tooltip player_id="838016" first="Bobby" last="Pettiford"] Jr. in their overtime victory against South Granville to make the 2A State title game once again. He’ll have a strong career at the next level at North Carolina Cantral.

1st Team

Guard [player_tooltip player_id="833306" first="Samage" last="Teel"] - Farmville Central

Teel is a strong guard prospect with the ability to get to the rim and defend the basketball. He ran the point guard for much of the 2019-20 season, controlling the tempo and leading the way with his ability to create. On defense, he’s quick and gritty on the ball and strong enough to guard the post. He’s gained traction on the recruiting trail with his latest run in the state playoffs, drawing offers from Presbyterian and UNC-Wilmington. He’ll be an unsigned senior to keep an eye on when things start back up in the summer.

Guard [player_tooltip player_id="770282" first="Kalib" last="Mathews"] - Henderson Collegiate

Queens University is getting a steal in incoming guard [player_tooltip player_id="770282" first="Kalib" last="Mathews"]. Mathews is a wiry prospect at 6-foot-4 that can catch fire in a hurry from behind the arc and in the midrange. He has a high IQ for creating whether on the fastbreak or in the halfcourt and won’t hesitate to take it to the rim and finish with authority. He was a second-team All-District selection and All-Conference selection as the Pride were set to make their second-straight appearance in the 1A State title game.

Guard [player_tooltip player_id="833163" first="Rashod" last="Smith"] - Washington

Smith is one of the more underrecruited point guards in the state but still has amassed over 1,900 points and 700 assists in his high school career. He’s a competitor that can drop a double-double scoring and assisting without much effort and impresses regardless of his listed height of 5-foot-8. He holds offers from William Peace and Bluefield College so far.

Wing/Guard [player_tooltip player_id="572984" first="Keishon" last="Porter"] - Southwest Edgecombe

Porter is set to make the Radford Highlanders a much better team in 2020-21 with his ability to play inside and out and attack the paint. He’s a high-flying wing player that makes things happen on the fastbreak and on the interior. He earned first-team All-Conference and All-District honors in his final season at SW Edgecombe while building a name for himself as one of the top prospects in the state.

Forward Avery Hoggard Jr. - Hertford County

Hoggard is a double-double machine in the frontcourt for Hertford County this season and took home third-team All-District honors while his team went 8-2 in conference action. He produced 14.1 ppg, 10.2 rpg, 1.8 apg and 1.7 spg in 2019-20 as his team made the third round of the state playoffs. He’s an unsigned senior at 6-foot-4 worth some looks.

2nd Team

Guard [player_tooltip player_id="833361" first="Isaac" last="Parson"] - Kinston

Parson is a true floor general that had a solid career at Kinston High and has started to draw the attention of college coaches with his ability to control the tempo and run the offense. He put up 13.5 ppg to go along with 8.4 apg during his senior year in 2019-20 to earn All-Conference first-team and All-District second team. He holds offers from Winston-Salem State and Mount Olive.

Guard [player_tooltip player_id="572979" first="Dylan" last="Blake"] - First Flight

Blake checks all the boxes as a shooting guard, he amassed over 2,000 points and made 313 3-pointers across his high school career at First Flight. He finished as the District Player of the Year for his third consecutive season in 2019-20. He’s got the ability to dish the ball as well. During his senior year, he dished out 3.0 assists per contest. His most underrated ability is his ability to rebound. He snagged 8.0 per game in 2019-20 and does well to push the pace to find his shot. He’ll find a nice landing spot at the next level very soon.

Guard Mitjonta Stanley - Holmes

Stanley took home Conference Player of the Year honors after averaging 13.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 4.7 apg and 3.5 spg for the Aces, who went 28-2 on the year. They were one of the toughest teams to play given their relentlessness on both ends and Stanley embodies those traits with his ability to compete on both ends with his play. He’s a 5-foot-10 guard with tons of ability on the hardwood.

Guard/Wing Marvin Tucker Jr. - North Edgecombe

Tucker was a senior guard that went under the radar during his final season with North Edgecombe as they made it all the way to the 1A East Regionals. He averaged 16.2 ppg, 9.2 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.7 spg and 1.6 bpg as their do-it-all force on the floor and folks took notice as he took home Conference Player of the Year honors by season’s end. He’s an athletic 6-foot-2 slasher that does well given his ability to bang in the post with his solid frame. He’s an unsigned senior that should get some looks for teams in need of versatile backcourt player.

Forward [player_tooltip player_id="931597" first="Devin" last="Brown"] - Eastern Wayne

Brown is a big man that came on strong during his senior year at Eastern Wayne with 17.7 ppg, 12.8 rpg and 1.9 bpg in 2019-20. He was a dominant force in the paint and showed off his 6-foot-8 length to do damage in his final season for the Warriors. He’s generated some interest from some local junior colleges and should be a solid pickup for whoever grabs his commitment.

3rd Team

Guard Jordan High - First Flight

[player_tooltip player_id="572979" first="Dylan" last="Blake"] isn’t the only First Flight player that did damage in 2019-20. Jordan High is another guard that showed his stuff as a player that can get hot in a hurry. He averaged 17.6 ppg, 6.9 rpg and 2.7 apg and put up 43 points on 13-of-21 shooting from the field in a game this season. He’s another player that does a little bit of everything to push the envelope. He’s still available as well.

Guard I’Jheaur Sharpe - North Edgecombe

Sharpe is another North Edgecombe player that appears on the All-Area State Team after leading the charge as the point guard for the Warriors. He’s a player that makes smart decisions with the ball and does well to not let the defense speed him up. He finished as a second-team All-District selection and an first-team All-Conference selection by season’s end. He’s another available guard with ability.

Guard Cedez Norman - Washington County

Norman was the fearless scoring leader for the Panthers in 2019-20, producing 17.6 ppg along with 6.5 rpg, 4.1 apg and 3.8 spg. He was a big reason for their 9-1 conference record with his ability to push the pace on both ends. He can score it on all three levels but doesn’t restrict himself to scoring. He’s a "do whatever it takes to win" type of guy.

Wing/Forward De’Andre Downing - Washington County

Downing is another underrated prospect at 6-foot-7 that has the ability to play around the rim and stretch the game to the perimeter. He’s got nice length for his height and uses it well to get to the rim and finish in traffic. He does well creating off the bounce on the perimeter as well. He’s an available versatile prospect on the market still. He averaged 13.6 ppg, 11.7 rpg, 4.2 apg, 3.5 spg and 2.2 bpg in 2019-20.

Forward Keenan Downing - Holmes

Downing was the leader on offense for the Aces this season, putting up 15.7 ppg along with 6.9 rpg, 2.2 apg and 2.0 spg. He’s an underrated forward prospect given his ability to compete in the paint and make a difference on the glass. He’s an undersized player at 6-foot-2 but makes up for it with his ability to make things happen.
