Here’s an in-depth look an the top available combo guards still on the board in Wisconsin…
Anthony Washington Anthony Washington 6'2" | SG Madison East | 2020 State WI – Madison East
Best guess right now is that Washington ends up going the junior college route and winds up at a Division 1 program in two years. Washington is a very athletic two-way player who makes things happen on both ends of the floor.
Washington missed a good chunk of the season, but came back to average just shy of 17 points per game as a senior. He scored in double figures in 16 of 17 games and also grabbed 5.4 boards per contest. A bouncy 6-foot-3 guard who can get up and down the floor in transition and generate transition buckets at a high level, Washington was able to shoot 59.1 percent from the floor in 2019-20.
Reed Gunnink Reed Gunnink 6'4" | CG Laconia | 2020 State WI – Laconia
We have Gunnink tabbed as one of the best Division 3 recruits in the state. Given that he’s 6-foot-4 and able to play all over the perimeter, there’s a lot to like about the senior guard. Gunnink does it all, averaging 17.5 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game as a senior.
He may not be on the board much longer. Gunnink told Prep Hoops Wisconsin that he’s currently down to UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville and hopes to make a decision soon.
Josh Dilling Josh Dilling 6'3" | CG Oshkosh North | 2020 State WI – Oshkosh North
Dilling holds offers from Bethany and William Jewel, a pair of Division 2 programs. He’s also receiving strong interest from New York Institute of Technology and St. Norbert’s. One of the bigger breakout players in the Fox Valley Association, Dilling was a first-team all-conference pick after averaging 19.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game.
The lefty (6-3) has good size and skills on the ball. He’s comfortable creating for others, getting to the rim, or creating space off the bounce for jumpers, but can also play off the ball and run through screens, acting as a long range sniper. Hey may not be great in any one specific area, but Dilling’s all-around ability and versatility as a guard made him a difficult cover.
Derek Gray Derek Gray 6'0" | CG Madison La Follette | 2020 State WI – Madison La Follette
UW-Whitewater and Lake Region State are the two programs making the biggest push for Gray right now. A kid that a lot of schools just don’t know about yet, Gray was as valuable as any player La Follette had during their 23-1 season, which featured a Big Eight Conference title and was trending towards a trip to the State Tournament.
Gray averaged 14.3 points per game and was second on the team in assists. A plus-length combo guard who can get downhill and plays with excellent touch around the rim, Gray is instant offense when he gets into the game. He can also turn up the pressure defensively and has no problem getting into people for a full 94 feet and loves to cause havoc and create turnovers.
Jyon Young Jyon Young 6'1" | CG Kenosha Tremper | 2020 State WI – Kenosha Tremper
Young had a monster senior season. He averaged 21.4 points per game and led Tremper to a surprising 18-7 record, including a trip to the sectional finals.
A physically raw guard with upside, Young has terrific hang-and-finish ability in traffic. The 6-foot-2 guard can thrive in transition or in isolation settings where his teammates clear out and he’s allowed to go to work. Young had 12 20-point games, including four 30-point efforts as a senior.
