Topeka High fought off a challenge from Manhattan to hold its spot atop the Centennial League pecking order. The Trojans improved to 10-3 in the league, tied with Washburn Rural.

Here are some takeaways from the Trojans 55-48 win:

Carlos Esquibel is a crucial piece of the Trojan team:

The lanky 6-foot-5 senior scored 10 points. Several of his five buckets helped fight off Indian rallies.

Da’Vonshai Harden is a bit of a wildcard:

Harden led all scorers with 17. The Topeka senior is a physical mismatch and can dominate with his combination of size and skill. But he launches ill-advised shots and makes questionable decisions. The Trojans need such an experienced and talented player to be a difference maker for the positive.

Geivonnii Williams makes things happen:

The wide receiver/defensive back is a big play specialist for Topeka High on the court as well. He is a 6-foot-1 threat from the perimeter, but he makes his biggest impact as a disruptive force on defense and on scramble plays.

King Sutton disrupts everything in the lane:

The Indians short-armed or rushed several shots in the paint because of the looming presence of the 6-foot-7 Trojan senior. Other times, Indian players simply pulled up for longer field goal attempts rather than come anywhere near Sutton. The senior added 15 on the offensive end.

Chandler Marks is a pretty impressive specimen himself:

The 6-foot-5 senior Marks is a capable match for Sutton. The Indians’ big man dropped 11 points and clogged the lane effectively.

Manhattan paid for its deficiency beyond the arc:

The Indians failed to hit even one of their numerous attempts from distance. The goose egg put them at a disadvantage against the taller and more athletic Trojans.
