The Indians earned another awesome win last week, beating Rugby 72-54, bouncing back from their first loss of the year last weekend. Four Winds has proven it can win games with elite defense, high-powered offense and everything in between. Bronson Walter and Jayden Yankton combined for 43 points and 15 points in the win over the Panthers. Then they went and beat a surging Dunseith team by 20. The Indians are the class of Class B without doubt and the favorite to win a state title.
Hatton/Northwood
Hatton/Northwood had itself a terrific week, earning three wins to improve to 16-2 on the year. Two of those wins came against teams that have been ranked or are ranked in New Rockford-Sheyenne and St. John. The Thunder have terrific balance not just offensively, but also on the defensive end of the floor. Avery Thorsgard and Alex Wolfe have been awesome on both ends of the floor as seniors. Colton Konschak is terrific and Kelby Azure is rock-solid inside.
Enderlin
If there was doubt that the Eagles were for real, this last week should quell that notion. Enderlin earned hard-fought wins over Central Cass and Richland – the projected third and first teams in Region 1 before the season started. Gus Hurlburt and Dawson Lemna were awesome in the win over the Squirrels – Hurlburt scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Lemna scored 13 points and dished out five assists. The Eagles still have a shot to earn the No. 1 seed in Region 1 as they’ll face Kindred in the final game of the regular season.
Kindred
The Vikings only played once last week, beating Milnor/North Sargent in thorough fashion, extending their winning streak 12 wins and improving to 13-3 on the year. Since a 1-3 start, Kindred has been elite, allowing just 48 points per game. The Vikings have terrific experience, balance on both ends of the floor, athleticism and toughness.
Rugby
Rugby lost to Four Winds/Minnewaukan last week, struggling mightily to score and handle the Indians’ athleticism. Jaden Hamilton was solid, going for 18 points and 11 rebounds but the rest of the Panthers had a rough go of it. The Panthers have lost to the two best teams they’ve played in recent weeks and while they have the talent to go deep in the postseason, they haven’t been tested much since the early portion of the year nor have they shown they can win games in contested fashion. This group is good enough to win the whole thing but some cracks in the armor have been exposed.
St. John
The Woodchucks took a pair of losses, losing to Langdon/Edmore/Munich by two and Hatton/Northwood by two. St. John hadn’t been tested much through the middle portion of its season and ultimately two losses doesn’t change much for this team. It’s still good enough to go deep in the postseason and will still likely be the top seed in its district. The Woodchucks needed to play some tight games and will take something from those games.
Beulah
The Miners are putting things together in a big way. They picked up a statement win Saturday, blowing out Bowman County 72-48 after beating Mott-Regent handily. Trey Brandt is putting together an all-state type season as a sophomore and the development of guys like Nathan Battest and Trapper Skalsky has been critical to the team’s success.
Dickinson Trinity
The Titans bounced back with a pair of blowout wins last week, beating Mott-Regent and Glen Ullin/Hebron. Dickinson Trinity is sitting at 16-3 on the year and tracking towards the No. 2 seed in Region 7. The Titans have a terrific defense and while the offense isn’t great, it’s balanced with guys who can get 6-12 points on a consistent basis.
Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier
The Rebels avoided what would’ve been a bad loss, beating Carrington in overtime to improve to 15-2 on the season. Alex Huber had another monster game, scoring 28 points to power the Rebels to a win. He’s playing at a high level right now and EKM is tracking to the No. 1 seed in Region 3 – District 5.
Langdon/Edmore/Munich
LEM picked up a massive win Thursday, beating District 8 opponent St. John 51-49. The Cardinals are sitting at 14-4 on the year and have won five games in a row plus are one of the few teams to play Four Winds/Minnewaukan tough. Grant and Simon Romfo have been strong all year. Jackson Delvo is an excellent lead guard and the Cardinals have excellent balance around them offensively.
