Jake Buchanan – 2020 – PG – Kimberly
Buchanan had 25 points to pace Kimberly. In control of the game at all times, Buchanan runs the show as well as any lead guard in this state. He plays through the offense and knows all of the ways to score within that system. Buchanan is also cognizant of where his teammates are at all times and knows exactly how to set them up to be successful. The Rockhurst commit always seems to elevate himself when the stakes are the highest and Friday was no exception. No matter the time or score, this kid is always so poised and collected on the floor.
Parker Lawrence – 2021 – PG – Hortonville
Don’t have Lawrence ranked yet, but that will be coming. The junior guard put up 31 points in Friday’s loss, getting hot during two key stretches to help the Polar Bears rally from substantial deficits. Lawrence hit some very tough pull-up 3’s with a hand in his face. Lawrence gets defenders off balance with a really hard one-dribble pull-up, forcing his man to backpedal just enough. Constant energy on the floor, Lawrence is always moving and the ball doesn’t stick to his hands. When he gives it up, Lawrence can catch defenders napping with back cuts for easy bunnies.
Jayquon Owens – 2020 – G – Hortonville
Owens had 11 points, including a key stretch that nearly allowed the Polar Bears to take a lead in the second half. The senior guard’s best moments came as a facilitator, however. Owens has a great feel for his teammates and can whip the ball across the court with precision. Owens can see things developing before they happen, which led to a lot of pretty assists. A strong, athletic guard, Owens can be effective playing downhill. It’s not one of his strengths, but Owens did hit a 3-pointer in the second half as well.
Jackson Paveletzke – 2022 – SG – Kimberly
This kid has the tools to be a dynamic scorer over the next couple of years. Paveletzke got off to a great start, scoring seven quick points and dishing out two assists early. A break-you-down guard who can shoot it from anywhere, Paveletzke is a dangerous shooter off the dribble, particularly from mid-range. He’s lanky, but plays stronger than he looks and will put his head down, draw contact, and score going away from the rim. The sophomore contributed 19 points in Friday’s win.
Logan Pearson – 2020 – SG – Kimberly
Pearson scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half. If you stick Pearson in the corner or anywhere on the perimeter really, defenders have to know where he is and it forces defenses to pick their poison with all the talent Kimberly has on the floor. Pearson can snipe teams in the catch-and-shoot game, but he’s one of the state’s most improved players for other reasons. Pearson has deceptive athleticism and finishing ability in traffic. The UW-Platteville commit had a couple of pretty 3-point plays in the second half that swung the game.
Cole Warning – 2020 – SG – Hortonville
Warning does a good job of facing, ripping, and attacking. The Ripon commit has his spots on the floor and is really comfortable getting into the 12-15 foot range and shooting off one or two dribbles. Warning scored 18 points. A lot of his buckets came as Kimberly was threatening to blow the game open. The senior often stepped up to pull Hortonville back into the game.
