The Eagles had another dominating week against the lower-tier EDC outfits, going 2-0 with blowout wins over Valley City and Wahpeton. Here’s some weird stats: Cole Hage led the Eagles in assists with nine in the win over Valley City while Cam Van Dam led the team in dimes with 10 in the win over Wahpeton. Grayson Haman led the team in rebounding in the win over Valley City. It’s an equal opportunity group where guys are piling up numbers in all sorts of categories this year.
West Fargo Sheyenne
The Mustangs only played once last week, but made it count, destroying West Fargo 98-66 to secure the first season-sweep of the rival Packers. Chuck Dubois poured in a career-high 25 points in the victory and this team is still in the mix to win the EDC.
Jamestown
The Bluejays won three games last week, moving to 15-2 on the year. They started the week with an 84-70 win over Bismarck Century, then avenged their first loss of the year, beating Minot 93-84. Boden Skunberg’s been on a tear lately and he out-dueled Jaxon Gunville in that win, going for 39 points. The Bluejays are sitting pretty to secure another WDA regular season title.
Bismarck
The Demons only played one game last week, taking care of business in a 98-67 win over Bismarck St. Mary’s. At 14-4 on the year, the Demons are likely locked into the No. 2 spot in the WDA at this point. A game against Mandan this week looms as one to watch as both teams are trending in the right direction come postseason.
Mandan
The Braves beat Dickinson and Williston to extend their winning streak to six and improve to 12-6 on the season. The final three games of the year are a bit of a doozy as Mandan will face Bismarck, Bismarck Century and Jamestown, but this team is peaking and has the talent to beat anybody.
Minot
The Magicians lost twice last week, falling to Bismarck Legacy 67-66 before losing to Jamestown 93-84. Minot is now 12-6 on the year after 7-1. Jaxon Gunville was terrific in the losses, scoring 25 against Legacy and 37 against Jamestown but the Magicians are lacking consistency right now and it might come back to haunt them as they are in danger of falling out of the top-three in the WDA standings.
Bismarck Legacy
The Sabers continue to roll, going 2-0 last week with wins over Minot and Bismarck Century. With games against Jamestown and Bismarck still to go, Legacy will have opportunities to earn a few more excellent wins before the postseason, but they are likely looking at a six or seven seed in the standings. As if this team needed more steam heading down the stretch, they got a nice boost from junior guard Nick Kupfer, who returned to the lineup this week. Kupfer probably won’t play major minutes right away – or at all this season – but he’s an experienced player who was a legitimate difference-maker for a team that went to state last year. That makes a team that has done a great job developing depth over the course of the year even deeper.
Bismarck Century
The Patriots lost twice last week, dropping games against Jamestown and Bismarck Legacy. The Patriots are 10-8 on the year and still face Mandan and Minot before the end of the regular season. It’s hard to count the Patriots out because of their defense and Cade Feeney, but it’s hard to count on anybody else on that team because the supporting cast has been so inconsistent. They are looking at likely finishing either sixth or seventh in the WDA standings.
Dickinson
Dickinson split games this week, losing to Mandan before beating up on Turtle Mountain. The Midgets have the softest remaining schedule of any of the top teams in the WDA, so they’ve got a shot at moving up the standings and maybe sneaking into a top-four finish. It’s more likely that they settle into the fifth spot – seedings might not matter a whole lot 2-7 because it’s going to be teams with state tournament talent and aspirations all the way through.
Grand Forks Red River
The Roughriders took a puzzling loss to Fargo South Friday, losing to the Bruins 77-72 to snap a four-game winning streak. Red River looks like the clear third best team in the EDC and has the benefit of already playing the top two teams in the league while the primary competition for the No. 3 spot in the league, Devils Lake, must still play both.
