Prep Hoops Idaho’s #40 overall player for 2020, James is one of the best 3-point shooters in all of Idaho. Whether he gets the ball in the corner off of a set play, or creates his own shot at the top of the key, James is a talented marksman from beyond the arch. With a long wing-span and good size, James is able to use his length to get his shot off over smaller defenders. James is a high-IQ player who can score in a variety of ways and has immense talent on offense. However, outside shooting is his best attribute.
Noah Haaland 2021, 6’7″ Forward-Lakeland
Haaland is someone who should skyrocket up the state’s list of junior prospects as the year goes on. He has perfect form from beyond the arch. The tallest player on this list, he is able to go off against any defensive player in the state. Haaland has the green light from anywhere on the court. Overall, he has a balanced offensive skill set with excellent athleticism. However, opposing coaches most fear the damage that he can devastate from outside.
Caden McLean 2021, 6’0″ Guard-Post Falls
McLean has a true shooter’s stroke who is an elite shooter from the corners. Having to share the court with one of the top players in all of Idaho in Colby Gennett, McLean is able to space the court for one of the top teams in the state in Post Falls. A son of a head coach, McLean shows that he has grown up in a gym. With excellent ball rotation on his shot and a good jump to help give him space against longer/taller wing defenders, McLean is a key cog for the Trojans.
Jakob Peterson 2020, 6’0″ Guard-NICS
Peterson has the quickest release that I have seen this season. He is able to knock-down shots off the bounce, destroy zones, or make deep shots out of set plays run for him. While he does not shoot with high arch, he has great rotation on the ball itself. I see the influence of the modern 3-point game in Peterson and his commitment to being an elite shooter. It is not often that a small school guy out of the Mountain Christian League makes his way as a true equal on a list of top regional shooters but Peterson is there. He is an excellent 3-point shooter with prototypical point guard skills. The senior guard can hold his own against any other shooter on this list.
Mason Whitaker 2020, 5’9″ Guard-Coeur d’Alene
The senior guard for Coeur d’Alene is often the best shooter on any court that he steps onto. While undersized Whitaker has big game experience, defensive tenacity, and 3-point consistency. Possessing a high arching shot, Whitaker creates opportunities for himself by either making open shots, using his steller pump fake to get into the lane to create shots for others, or by moving undisciplined defenders slightly out of the way only to give himself a cleaner look at the basket.
