However, until then, let’s take a look at the sleepers in the new top 90 of the Prep Hoops Idaho 2020 Player Rankings.
- Ben Zubaly 5’10 G, Lakeland
Ben might be my favorite guard on the entire 2020 list. He plays the game like a high school version of Patrick Beverly without the explicit trash-talking (it might be happening on the court, but we don’t see it from the stands). He approaches the defensive side of the court with reckless abandon. Zubaly has a legitimate argument that he is the best defender of opposing point guards in the entire state. He holds his own offensively as well with an ability to make 3’s and get to the hoop seemingly at will.
- Tyler Munsee 6’4 G, Lighthouse Christian
Jeremy Stoddard wrote up a great in-depth piece on Munsee. Munsee is a winner through and through. Hailing from 1A DII defending State Champion Lighthouse Christian Lions, Munsee led them to a 26-0 undefeated record, was named Conference Defensive Player of the Year, and made First Team All-State. Oh, and he did that all while averaging 20.8 ppg, 9.4 rpg, and 4.7 apg.
- Gavin Luna 6’3 F/C, Kellogg
While Luna plays as an undersized post, he is really good at what he does. Luna has good footwork around the basket, understands body control, has a great entry seal-off, and plays with the basketball IQ of a son of a former coach. There should definitely be a place for Luna to play college basketball next year.
Let’s hear it for the Mountain Christian League!
The smallest conference in the state of Idaho has a history of producing diamond in the rough players if college coaches know where to look. Fortunately, Prep Hoops Idaho has been hard at work and found some of those players. For the first time, an MCL player is ranked on our site.
- Jakob Peterson 6’0 G, North Idaho Christian
Having watched almost every high school team from Canada to Grangeville, I think Peterson is one of the better pure senior point guards in the area. He has a quick release shot, can use the pump fake to get to 15 feet for a quick pull-up, can pass the ball around the court, and is solid at getting his teammates involved. Peterson has quick feet that can help him stay in front of opposing guards. Also, he just comes across as a good guy. This summer, he lead a local campaign to get new basketball shoes for those individuals in Kootenai County who were not able to afford them. Peterson appears as a guard who can be a good locker room presence and leader on the court.
Peterson isn’t the only MCL representative on this list. There are a couple of other MCL guys who earned their way on:
- Carey Sovereign 6’2 G, Christian Center
- Jack Hill 5’11 G, North Idaho Christian
- Morgan O’Brien 6’4 F, Christian Center
Additionally, look for 7’0 Malachi Bullington to make a strong debut on the Sophomore Rankings.
- Ryan Roos 6’2 G, Sandpoint
I am a big fan of guys who can defend their position at an elite level and Roos can do that. With the height and length to defend wing plays who are taller and the speed and quickness to keep up with shorter players, Roos is one of the better wing defenders in his region.
