Corona, CA – As time passes and the world we live in changes, the game of basketball evolves as well. From times where big men once dominated the post, we now see 7 footers drawing defenses away from the paint and splashing jumpers from the perimeter. For Chase Courtney, this era of basketball style suits him just fine.
Growing up, Chase was able to watch his dad Joe on the TV screen. A former NBA player who spent his career with several teams including the Bulls, Suns, and the Bucks, Joe Courtney has played an integral role to his son’s development. “At his age, Chase is a better shooter and is more athletic than I was” the elder Courtney tells Prep Hoops. Having played with guys like Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Charles Barkley, Joe Courtney is able to offer his son a unique perspective on the game that not many can give. What raises Chase’s ceiling is that he has the pedigree, genes, and knowledge from a former pro player.
As the times change and teams needing big men to be more versatile, Chase’s game seems to have been tailor made for the new era. He’s a versatile pick and pop threat who possesses mobility, size, and athleticism. He shot over 50 percent from beyond the arc last year. With his unique skill set, Chase has the potential and ability to contribute in many ways. “I study a mix of guys usually Giannis, Kevin Durant, and Anthony Davis as well as many others but I’d say those are the main 3.” Chase reveals. In order to have the skill set that his idols possess, Chase adds “the work I did this summer was a lot of ball handling work lifting and diet. Also making sure I was staying in shape and playing pickup.”
After putting up 15 and 10 with 2 blocks a game last year, Courtney made the jump to Napa to play for GSP Prep. “My team goals this season are to win and for us all to play well and stay healthy and end up in good situations.” says Chase. “As far as my personal goals go I’d say just be able to show colleges why I’m a great choice for their program and to stay in the gym and keep getting better “
Chase is currently unsigned and holding interest from several colleges ranging from all levels.. Georgetown and TCU are among others who have reached out and shown interest. When it comes to school, Chase adds “I am looking for a coach and players I would connect with and who would help me develop further and make me a better player overall . I’d also be looking for a close team and of course I have preferences on location but it doesn’t matter as long as it’s a place I can grow and that will make me the best version of myself I can become.”
