Prep Hoops Colorado has done our best to get out to as many games as we can and have seen plenty of these players this season. We have already discussed some of the top scorers before the break and also assisters but now we focus on some of the top bigs who have been able to affect the game with their work on the boards. Ryan Ure, Eaton – 12.3 rebounds a game
Eaton is a team that is off to a very hot start and that is because they are a deep team with players that understand their role. They are one of the few teams in the state with multiple players averaging in double figures in scoring and their best player this season has been their junior big man Ryan Ure. Ure is at 11 points and 12 rebounds a game. Last season he was close to averaging a double-double as a sophomore so I know that he has that as one of his goals this season as it is also helping the team pick up wins in the process as well. Stock boosing start of the season for Ure.
Daniel Alvarado, Strasburg – 12 rebounds a game
Strasburg is a team that you always have to watch out for as they seem to always have a bunch that is around when it is all said and done. They play hard, they take teams down to the wire and always have a guy or two that stands out and has a big year. SO far that player has been Alvarado who is having one of the most improved years in all of 3A. He went from a seldom-used player that got his feet wet as a sophomore to averaging 16 points and 12 rebounds a game. Hopefully, he is able to pick this up and get out to a Prephoops event or two this summer so we can evaluate him against some of the top players in the state. Great start of the year for him.
Jonathan Cosme, KIPP Denver Collegiate – 15.3 rebounds a game
The 3A leader in rebounds is at KIPP and they have gotten off to a pretty good start at 5-2 on the season. Their best player has been their forward Cosme who is not only at 18 points a game but averaging a double-double of 15.3 rebounds as well. He is scoring at will, protecting the paint and also staying aggressive on the boards as well.
Caleb Curran-Velasco, James Irwin – 12.7 rebounds a game
James Irwin is not having a good season whatsoever. They have let games get away from them, they have not executed late and also see the losses continue to pile but that cannot take away from the start of the season that Curran-Velasco is having. He is not scoring a ton but understands his niche is on the boards. He is giving his all and keeping plays alive and that’s all you can ask for.
Melvin Taylor, Bruce Randolph – 12.4 rebounds a game
Bruce Randolph has not won a game at all but that does not take away from the fact that they have a junior that is doing his best to give them a chance every single time out. He is at 17.7 rebounds a game and has more rebounds a game(12.4 rpg) than the second-leading scorer has in points.
