Webster Classic Recap: Top Teams

<p style="text-align: left;">Prep Hoops Missouri takes a look at the top teams at last weekend's Webster Classic. Top-seeded McCluer won the championship with a come-from-behind 49-48 victory over host Webster Groves. In the third-place game, Confluence Academy defeated Staley 62-59.</p> <p>McCluer: The Comets came away with the championship to improve its record to 7-0 out of the gate. McCluer rallied from a 16-point deficit to defeat host Webster Groves 49-48 in the championship game. The Comets have good size and athleticism up and down the lineup. They also have a go-to guy in 6'6" 2020 wing Devon Barshow, who scored 17 points and hit the game-winning free throws with nine seconds left in the championship game. He can score from just about anywhere. At point guard, 6'2" 2020 Jeremiah Johnson has been the lineup since his freshman year. An up and coming wing player is 6'4" 2021 Anias Futrell while 6'5" 2020 forward Kamaryn Hubbard is looking good after missing much of last season with an injury.</p> <p>Webster Groves: The Statesmen have a new coach after the retirement of Hall of Fame mentor Jay Blossom, but the winning has continued after an appearance in the championship game. Webster Groves will be very competitive again because they have a stable of good guards. Anthony Phieffer, a 5'10 2021 guard made the All-Tournament Team after a very productive weekend. Football standout Jacobie Banks is a talented all-around 2020 guard who can get buckets while 5'9" 2022 Matt Enright has deep shooting range. Luke Maupin is a athletic 6'4" 2021 forward who can score around the basket and rebound.</p> <p>Confleuce Prep: The Titans enjoyed a productive weekend in finishing third, which included an exciting 62-59 victory over Staley in the third-place game. One of the tournament's revelations was the play of 6'1" 2021 guard Kamaren Bevel, who can knock down perimeter jumpers and create offense off the dribble. CPA has other good backcourt personnel in 5'9" 2020 Devin Phillips, 6'2" 2020 athlete Caleb Helm and 6'0" 2022 Trasean White, who has excellent quickness off the dribble. The top 2020 is 6’4 forward Lyndell Hunt, who was playing banged up during the weekend.</p> <p>Staley: The Falcons made their annual trek from the Kansas City area to compete at Webster, where head coach Chris Neff was a former assistant. Athletic, all-around guard Byron Alexander, a 6’3 2020 was named to the All-Tournament Team. 6’6 2021 forward Jamaal Davis is a very effective post player while 2023 point guard Kyan Evans is a talented young playmaker who has made an immediate impact.</p>
