1. Hillside Hornets (5-0)
The Hillside Hornets are already 5-0 in Triangle 8 play despite being a new addition. With two wins over Jordan High and an eight-game winning streak under their belt, the Hornets will look to keep things going in the new year. Senior guard Trey Crews can fill it up while Dr’ake Thompson is another senior to watch. They return to play on Jan. 7 against Riverside-Durham.
2. Riverside-Durham Pirates (4-0)
The Pirates are undefeated in Triangle 8 action with four of their latest victories coming in conference play. They’re on their way to different results after winning just seven games in 2018-19 in-conference. Led by 2022 Keyon Webb, 2020s Torian Regis, Jikari Johnson and Josh Alston, they’re a group looking good early in the conference.
3. Athens Drive Jaguars (2-1)
The Jaguars have made out farely well since losing senior D.J. Robertson to graduation. 2020 guard A.J. Thompson and fellow seniors Jonah Milchuck, Brandon Poggioli and Brandon Spruill have led a balanced attack this season and it’s been so far, so good.
4. Panther Creek Catamounts (1-2)
The Panther Creek Catamounts are another squad that’s had to replace a top senior scorer in 2019-20. 2021 guard Daylen Berry leads the way with 17.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.3 steals, 2.0 assists and 1.7 blocks per game. He’s a guard that can fill it up as can 2020 Armon Muldrew and 2021 Dylan Drinkwater.
5. Jordan Falcons (2-3)
The Jordan Falcons have been a scrappy bunch so far, pushing Hillside to overtime in their latest loss in conference play 68-62. Head coach Rasheed Wallace already has this squad ahead of schedule after going 1-9 in 2018-19. Ramses Denis Cooper (2020), Dawson Edwards (2022) and Maxwell Thornton (2022) are a few players to watch.
6. Green Hope Falcons (1-2)
Green Hope has some room to improve with the bulk of Triangle 8 play ahead of them. They’ve got two close losses to Jordan and Panther Creek already. 2021 guard Reese Evans leads them in scoring with 15.7 points per game. They’ll need more in the frontcourt from 2021s Tre Morgan and Broderick Ellis.
7. Cary Imps (0-3)
The Cary Imps are one of two teams that remain winless in Triangle 8 action heading into the New Year. They’ll be a team to keep an eye on with some experienced players in their rotation.
8. Green Level Gators (0-3)
The Green Level Gators remain winless on the year at 0-10 and winless in conference play at 0-3. As a newly formed school, this could be a learning season for them but their experience the following season should make it a memorable one.
