The all-around 6-foot-3 wing has been recovering from his injured knee late last season, trying to get back on the court. That hard work has paid off as Crockett was cleared to play in the Les Schwab Tournament, and he was able to set foot on the court in the Lions opening round game – a narrow loss against Norcross (GA).
“For a first game it was pretty tough,” Crockett said. “My knee felt pretty good but I just have to get back into rhythm. It felt a little weird because I haven’t played a game in about a year, so I have to get used to it again.”
The plan was for Crockett to come off the bench and play some limited minutes, and that’s exactly what he did, logging 11 minutes of action. In those 11 minutes, the senior hit his first shot – a mid-range jumper – and later sank a three for a total of five points. It’s a start for Crockett, who during his recovery focused on changing his game a little to compensate for his knee.
“I’d been working on leg strength but basketball-wise I’ve been working on my shot,” Crockett said. “Just getting back I have to change my game a little bit so I have to work on my jump shot more because getting into the paint – I don’t want to risk getting injured again.”
Crockett said that while he’s been cleared to play, he definitely doesn’t feel 100 percent yet – that he can’t really push off the injured leg too hard quite yet. One of his hopes is to recapture some of the college recruiting attention he had been receiving prior to getting hurt. While he notes that he’s still hearing from schools such as Northwest Nazarene and Point Loma, he’s hopeful that Division I schools will get interested again.
“I’m trying to gain that back this season,” Crockett said.
As he eases back into more and more action with the Lions, Crockett feels that not only the college interest will come again but also a lot of wins for West Linn. “We’ve definitely gotten a lot better,” Crockett said. “Previously in the summer and in the fall we weren’t that good but we definitely proved a statement today. I think once we’re all back and I’m all back for sure, I think we can go far in March.”
Crockett currently ranks as the #11 ranked player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
