The day tipped off with a match-up between #5 Troy and #12 Memphis University High, and both teams did a nice job of warming things up for those who followed.
Each team came out firing bombs from long distance, but Troy proved to have too firepower overall in this one and found it difficult to keep pace down the stretch. The Trojans shot their way to a 35-22 halftime lead that extended to more than twenty in the second half in route to a 61-43 opening round victory.
Troy used crisp ball movement and purposeful screens to put on a clinic and they shot it at a blistering clip. 6’1 Jr Griff St. Pierre and 6’0 Fr Jack Fessesden buried three a piece. 5’10 Fr Charlie Nett and 5’7 Sr Tyson Ludwig each swished home a pair from long distance. As a team, Troy had a dozen made three pointers on the day. If they can continue to shoot threes at volume, the Trojans will be a tough out this season.
Memphis U may have taken the loss, but they had some impressive shooting performances as well. 6’3 Jr Ayman McGowan has a quick trigger and proved he can fill it up anywhere around the arc. He drilled three triples while 5’9 Jr Jack Jabbour burned up the nets by connecting on four jumpers from beyond the arc..
