It ended up being some very competitive action between squads who are all expected to be state tournament challengers in their respective classes/states. Here’s a look at the games and the top performers.
Barlow 78, Battle Ground 53
In the opening game, Barlow broke through with their perimeter shooting and finished the tournament with a win. Evan Inglesby continued his tear with 33 points and Jesse White contributed with 18. Battle Ground was led by big man Kaden Perry with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while guards Nate Millspaugh and Brendan Beal added 16 and 14 points respectively. For Barlow, the win hopefully gives them momentum into the rest of the season.
“To be honest with you, I was not disappointed with the way we played the first three games, I was disappointed we didn’t shoot the ball better,” said Barlow head coach Tom Johnson. “We put ourselves in the position to win all three games and I couldn’t have asked for more than that. One of the reasons I scheduled (the LSI) is I thought we would be tough enough to handle it. I guess we’ll find out after the first of the year.”
Grant 49, Lake Oswego 46
A day after an up-tempo overtime win over Barlow, Grant buckled down and grinded out a victory over Lake Oswego. The Generals, normally an outside shooting team, took it to the basket hard, especially in the second half, in the win. Emanuel Steward led the way with 15 points while Erik Fraser added 14 and freshman Adrian Mosley scored 12. Trace Salton led the Lakers with 17 points. Grant lost its first two games at the LSI but rebounded with their last two wins.
“We talk about how do you face adversity, how do you get over it,” said Grant head coach Robert Key. “Just believing in each other, no one got down. Just getting over that hump (against Barlow) changes a lot of things and winning feels good – and that’s what we want to do.”
Jesuit 56, Wilsonville 49
In a unique matchup not only between the defending 5A and 6A champions but between legendary coaches Chris Roche and Gene Potter, Wilsonville and Jesuit had a predictably great matchup with the Crusaders pulling away at the end. Matt Levis led the charge for the Crusaders with 20 points while Liam Ruttledge and James Lang continued their perimeter assault with 12 and 11 points respectively. Wilsonville, playing without star forward Dakota Reber, was led by Gabe Reichle’s 17 points and Keegan Shivers added 15.
For Potter, it was the 92nd game he coached in the LSI for Jesuit, easily the longest streak of any coach or school in the event’s history. “I’ve been doing (the LSI) for a long time but it’s not old for (the kids),” said Jesuit head coach Gene Potter. “So I try to bring the enthusiasm so that the kids that are on the team can enjoy the experience. I love seeing the teams and it’s such high quality basketball and it’s such a well-run event. It’s just fun.”
Top Performers
Evan Inglesby (2020 Barlow) – Stats: 33 points, 10 rebounds, 13-15 fg, 5-7 3pt
Inglesby finished off a spectacular tournament with another brilliant outing. The 6-foot-4 wing simply had it on automatic with his shot, nailing jumpers from everywhere on the court while also converting off drives to the rim. We’ve said it over and over again, Inglesby is able to do all of this while never really forcing the issue and within the framework of the offense. There’s been some recent activity with Inglesby’s recruitment as well and we will have an update posted soon.
Jesse White (2020 Barlow) – Stats: 18 points, 6 assists, 7-16 fg, 3-11 3pt
We’ve seen plenty of games where White has completely gone off from the perimeter and unfortunately the Les Schwab Invitational has not been those times, especially the first three games. But the 6-foot senior seemed to find his shot a little in Barlow’s final contest, especially from two-point range as White completed some tough buckets around the hoop. He was also more active with his passing, looking to hit open teammates for threes – as a team, Barlow knocked down 15 treys.
Trace Salton (2021 Lake Oswego) – Stats: 17 points, 9 rebounds
So far this season it seems that Lake Oswego has struggled to find someone to go get a bucket when they really need one. Salton may be stepping up as that man. The 6-foot-5 forward effectively used his body to create space off the dribble and had some solid finishes in the paint. He has a fairly nice touch from mid-range and also knocked down a face-up jumper. Salton used his said body to grab boards on both ends.
Adrian Mosley (2023 Grant) – Stats: 12 points, 7 rebounds, 6 blocks, 3 steals
Mosley had the most all-around performance of the day and was the most spectacular defender. Blessed with a physically mature body at 6-foot-2, he essentially played bully ball by backing down his defender for buckets in the lane and on defense, used that muscle to establish position and then utilized his length to block shots. Mosley also defended on the perimeter to grab some steals. We’re still not exactly sure what position Mosley is on the floor but listing him as “player” certainly works for now.
Matt Levis (2020 Jesuit) – Stats: 20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals
Levis is going to be the senior leader for the defending champs and he had his best all-around game against Wilsonville. Perhaps it was going up against childhood friend Gabe Reichle, but the 6-foot senior really played inspired basketball on both ends of the floor. He converted some tough drives to the hoop and on defense, really got on the ball and was active. In the end it was his best game of the tournament.
Gabe Reichle (2020 Wilsonville) – Stats: 17 points, 3 rebounds
He isn’t flashy but Reichle gets the job done. Especially with Dakota Reber out the past three games, the 6-foot-2 guard has taken on more of the responsibility of being a scorer and he’s advanced past being just a shooter. Reichle took it strong to the hole where he finished at the basket or with the floater. When he drew the foul, he was money at the free throw line. There were some uncharacteristic turnovers but when Reber is back you can expect those to be eliminated.
Keegan Shivers (2020 Wilsonville) – Stats: 15 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 3-7 3pt
Shivers is a jack-of-all-trades type of player but he had his shot going against Jesuit, especially from long range where he found openings and showed good range. He really stepped up and helped out with the ball-handling and passing, and at his 6-foot-4 height was able to see the floor effectively to find the open man. Given the load he too struggled with some turnovers against Jesuit’s pressure but it was another nice all-around game from the senior.
