Manasquan entered the game with a 2-0 record and were looking to flex their muscles against strong competition out of the Shore Conference. They won the first two quarters 18-14 to take an eight point lead heading into halftime. The lead was 13 after three quarters when Newark East Side began their comeback. The lead was just too much as their comeback attempt was halted. They outscored Manasquan 24-18 in the fourth quarter.
There was some talent playing in this game. Here are some of the top prospects from this matchup between two of the best teams in the state.
Alex Galvan
Galvan is a tremendous all-around athlete. At 6’7, he is a force on the basketball court and has been for years. This is his senior year and final one playing basketball. Galvan has a baseball commitment to Louisville but his talent on the basketball court cannot be ignored. He picked up his third double-double in three games with 32 points and 11 rebounds in Manasquan’s win over Newark East Side. Galvan is the class of the Shore Conference and will make some noise statewide this season.
Mikah Johnson Jr.
Johnson is a name to keep an eye on this season. Newark East Side has been one of the best programs over the last few years in New Jersey. With Johnson, they have a chance to get right back to that level. He is committed to play at Monmouth next season but he has some unfinished business in high school. Johnson opened the season with a 16 point, 12 rebound effort and poured in 24 points against Manasquan. He will be a dynamic scorer in every game he plays this season.
Ben Roy
Manasquan is in good hands with Roy. The sophomore point guard is proving through three games that he can score against anyone. Roy finished with 304 points in his freshman season. So far in 2019, Roy has scored double-digits in all three games including 16 against Newark East Side. He has knocked down three shots from three-point range in each of his last two games. Roy will be a nice compliment to Galvan on a Manasquan team that has big hopes for the season.
Gabriel Olaniyi
Olaniyi is one of the intriguing players on the Newark East Side team. Johnson is a finished product and Olaniyi is a little less polished. Regardless, he is still a strong scorer. He has finished with double-digit points in each of the team’s first two games. Olaniyi finished with six shots from the field in a 14 point effort against Manasquan. Moving forward, Olaniyi will continue to score on a consistent basis.
Kieran Flanagan
Every team has a player who can do it all and Flanagan is that player for Manasquan. In three games, Flanagan has scored double-digits twice, has three or more assists in every game, and three or more steals in every game. This includes a 17 point, six steal performance in a win over Brick Memorial. Flanagan is going to be an extremely important player for Manasquan through the middle of the season and come playoff time.
