Every coach needs a senior, maybe two or three to win games.
It’s because of some of these seniors that their teams have started the 2019 season off on the right foot.
Here are 10 seniors who have been impactful so far:
Anterrio Jeffries, Overton: The 6-foot-6 forward has been a plus for the Wolverines this season. The transfer from Melrose is averaging 11 points, nine rebounds and two blocks per game so far. Jeffries is knocking on the door of averaging a double-double. Jeffries is one of the main reasons Overton is 4-2 right now.
Jacobi Wood, Cleveland: The Belmont commit has been putting up solid numbers. Wood has had two 50-point games and two other games scoring at least 26 points. His best performance thus far came against Cookeville when he dropped 53 points (11 3-pointers) to go along with six assists and six rebounds. The Blue Raiders are currently 8-0.
Phillip Horton, Fayette Ware: The 6-5 wing is currently averaging 15 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game for the Wildcats. Fayette Ware is currently 3-1 on the season.
Decorian Payton, Center Hill: The senior forward has been on a tear at the beginning of the 2019 season. Payton is coming off a 20-point, 16-rebound performance in a home loss against Houston. Last week, he recorded double-doubles in wins over Oxford and Southaven. The defending MHSAA 5A state champions are off to an 8-3 start.
Ty Hurst, Knoxville Carter: The senior shooting guard is currently averaging 23 points, seven rebounds and three assists per game. The Hornets are currently 7-1.
Justin Borders, Cordova: Borders has had to win games as of late for the Wolfpack. He had 21 points in the 71-61 win over Bolivar last week. Borders had 19 points in Monday’s home win against Raleigh-Egypt. The transfer from PCA went 8 for 8 from the free throw line against the Pharaohs. For the season, Borders is averaging 16 points, 3.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Cordova sits at 6-1 on the season.
Duane Posey, Memphis East: The 6-6 forward has been a plus for the Mustangs in the frontcourt. Posey had 18 points in a home win against Bartlett last week. He followed up that performance with 23 points and 13 rebounds in a home win against Wooddale. Memphis East is currently 4-2.
Marcellus Brigham Jr., Briarcrest: The Jacksonville State commit has been a force. In the Saints’ overtime win over Male, Brigham Jr. scored 21 points. He opened up the season with a 12-point, seven-rebound outing in a home win against Trezevant. Briarcrest is currently 6-0.
Will Pruitt, Mt. Juliet: The Lipscomb commit is currently averaging 24.3 points, 6.7 assists and 6.4 rebounds per game. The Golden Bears are currently 7-0. Mt. Juliet has big wins over McGavock, Siegel, Lebanon and East Nashville.
K’Juan Banks, Cordova: The senior guard is averaging 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game for the Wolfpack. The transfer from Bolton has blended in well with Cordova’s talented junior class.
