Since early spring, Gavin Ralph took his aggressiveness and athleticism to an elite level. His vertical came gradually; tournaments and camps throughout the summer saw the guard jump from imaginary springboards for finishes around the hoop. He sprouted, too. Now standing at 6’4”, the guard can slide from the 1, 2 or 3 spots on offense and play a versatile defensive role.
His aggressiveness really caught up with his skillset at the Hard Work Finals, where Ralph demanded touches and tallied 27 points. “My teammates were finding me and we were playing so well,” Ralph said. “When they needed a bucket they put the ball in my hands and it felt good that they could trust me like that.”
That high-scoring scene may become increasingly commonplace come the school season. Ralph and Carter Lomas headline a Wauzeka-Steuben team that finished 22-2 last season, and with the duo making strides in the offseason, they sit comfortably within a field of preseason contenders.
But, to contend, Ralph seeks more personal improvement. In his junior year, he’ll begin, “being a leader on the court and talking more on the court…” It’s those improvements that could make interest materialize into offers.
The guard currently fields interest from Winona State, Bemidji State, Upper Iowa, UW Parkside, Northern Michigan, Minnesota-Moorhead, and Clarke University among others. And, if things continue on a skyward trajectory, then the guard will be the subject of active recruiting talks in his senior year.
