With the 2019 high school basketball season around the corner, I’m providing teases to viewers on players they should watch out for this upcoming season.
Here’s another list of players who are expected to have a solid 2019 campaign:
Reese McMullen, Christian Brothers: The junior shooting guard has improved on his ball handling to go along with deadly outside shooting. The 6-foot-2 sniper is coming off a sophomore season where he averaged 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and 1.5 steals per game.
Grant Hurst, Cleveland: The junior point guard is one of the most gifted passers in the 2021 class. Hurst can easily average close to 10 assists per game this upcoming season.
Marcus Fitzgerald, Pearl Cohn: Fitzgerald, left-handed, is a tough task with the ball in his hands. His championship experience from Brentwood Academy will help his new team. Fitzgerald is a scoring guard (efficient outside shooting), which is why he’s primed for one more special season.
Wes Maples, Sevier County: The 6-4 senior shooting guard is on a mission to get his team back to the state tournament in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Maples isn’t getting the recognition he deserves. He can score from different areas on the court. Maples is deadly from 3-point range.
Jaylen Pegues, Hillsboro: The junior guard is coming off a sophomore season where he averaged 11 points, four rebounds and three assists per game. Pegues had a productive summer with Work Hard Be Humble 16U.
Isaiah Jones, East Nashville: The 6-6 wing has all of the tools to have a big junior season. He really needs to find consistently with his mid-range jump shot. Jones averaged 13.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 0.9 steals per game as a sophomore.
JJ Platt, Webb School: The senior will be playing alongside Tennessee commit Keon Johnson. The two together will have the program in the mix for a Division II Class A Boys’ State Championship appearance. Platt averaged 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game last season.
Kennedy Chandler, Briarcrest: The Saints are the favorite to win the Division II Class AA Boys’ State Championship, and Chandler is a big reason for that. He won Mr. Basketball of the league last season after averaging 19.5 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals per game. Chandler was also MVP of Briarcrest’s state title win over Brentwood Academy. He would most likely add more accolades this upcoming season.
Joe Anderson, Maryville: Anderson should get heavy consideration for Mr. Basketball if he repeats last season’s averages of 20.6 points, 4.8 assists, 3.1 steals and 2.6 rebounds. The kid can stroke it from the outside, and he can get to the basket.
Bobby Parks, Harding Academy: After the departure of Luke Howard, Parks will need to lead the Lions. It’s not like he doesn’t have the capabilities of doing so. As a junior last season, Parks averaged 17 points a game.
