No POY race in recent memory has had as many potential candidates as this one. Throughout the season PH will keep you updated with the POY race. In this article, we take a look at the preseason candidates.
Favorites:
Jaden Hardy 6’4 PG Coronado 2021 (#1 2021) – Has a chance to end up being the best player on the best team.
Noah Taitz 6’3 SG Bishop Gorman (#3 2020) – After losing their top two bigs, BG is going to need a big year from Taitz in order to repeat.
Zaon Collins 6’1 PG Bishop Gorman 2021 (#2 2021) – Ditto
Julian Strawther 6’6 SF Liberty 2020 (#2 2020) – Should be among the leading scorers in the state and Liberty is going to be one of the contenders.
Daishen Nix 6’5 PG Trinity International 2020 (#1 2020) – His 42 point performance in a win against Compass last week has him as the early favorite.
Contenders
Donavan Yap 6’2 SG Arbor View 2020 (#5 2020) – Arbor View has title aspirations, if Yap is the catalyst then he has a shot at the award.
Martell Williams 6’2 SG Silverado 2020 (#7 2020) – The Silverado Scoring Machine has a chance to Melo size his squad.
Will McClendon 6’4 SG Bishop Gorman 2021 (#3 2021) – McClendon could easily fit in the favorite candidate, however, someone’s going to have to sacrifice numbers Taitz is a senior, Collins is a PG so McClendon fits right here.
Dark Horses
Mason Whittaker 6’5 PG Spanish Springs 2020 (#44 2020) – Going to take a perfect storm of things to go right, But this could be the year a player from up North takes home the award.
Anthony Hunter 5’11 PG Durango 2020 (#6 2020) – Durango is going to be good, Hunter maybe the best two way player in the state.
Alexander Spaight 6’0 PG Canyon Springs 2020 (#15 2020) – Spaight is going to put up some big scoring nights for a very good Canyon Springs Squad.
Long Shots:
Ray Daniels 6’6 SF Somerset Academy 2020 (#22 2020) – Barring injury, Daniels is going to lead the state in scoring. Not sure how many games the 4th year school is going to win, so it may take him putting up un – ignorable numbers.
Elijah Jackson 6’0 PG Churchill County 2020 (#26 2020) – Jackson is one of the most electric athletes in the state. Hard for a 3A guy to win, but he would be the odds on favorite.
Eathan Speaker 6’6 SF Boulder City 2021 (#8 2021) – Speaking of 3A players. Speaker is a clear dark horse. Is going to be the man for a contending Boulder City squad.
