It is November and the season-opening games are just getting kicked off. Let’s take a dive into the various districts, and begin previewing teams and players to watch! Today we dive into the UIL 5A-III District 24!

Pre-Season Player of the Year:

This year's favorite to win the MVP and is the preseason player of the year is Bryce Griggs. He is currently ranked as the second-best prospect in the state of Texas for his class. Last season he was awarded the District Offensive MVP as a freshman where he also led the district in scoring with a 21 point per game, 4.3 rebounds per game, 3.4 assists per game, and 1.8 steals per game averages on the season last year. He also had the most made trey balls last year in the district with 84 made. He is a scoring point guard that can also create for his teammates. He will be a very tough assignment for opponents to check on a daily basis.

Team to Beat:

Fort Bend Hightower Hurricanes will be the team to beat this year in the district. Last season they went 13-3 in district play and went 28-10 overall as they made an exit in the fourth round of the playoffs last season. The hurricanes have a lot of senior firepower this year with Chris Harris, Kris O'Neal, Cameron Collins, Ja Roberts, and Markel James. They also have a five-star recruit in sophomore Bryce Griggs who will be the favorite to win MVP and their other sophomore sensation Jacory Chatman. You can look for the Hurricanes to make a deeper run this year and try to get to San Antonio.

Biggest Threat:

Alvin Shadow Creek Sharks were last season district champs as they posted a 15-1 record in district play and went 26-6 overall for the season. They fell in the second round of the playoffs last season and look to push even further this year. Don't think that this team will have a big let down from last season because they will be led by tough senior guard Trejon Ware and a slew full of junior prospects, two of which hold multiple D1 offers in Will Young and Ramon Walker. Juniors Zy Mortle a transfer in from Louisiana and Kyron Drones who is currently on the football field will round out the pack for the Sharks. You can also count on the sophomore small forward who has picked up his first D1 offer to add to that firepower in Shawn Jones Jr.

Sleeper:

Manvel Mavericks will have something to say about all of this and are the sleeper team in the district. They are good and look to be back in the playoffs this season. Last year they went 9-6 in district play went 21-13 overall on the season as they lose in the first round of the playoffs last year. The Mavericks bring back a lot of firepower and look to beat a lot of teams this year with senior play from Myles Levin and Trayvon Martinez. Their junior core is really solid in Shaun Walker manning the middle, Azari Woods at the helms, and Mason McBride the bouncy one.
