I have seen enough games to know which players are trying to put their name out there amongst the elite. Some of the names below shouldn’t shock anyone, but they will. But I have seen all of these kids to know what they are capable of doing on the court.
Here are 15 players who are off to a hot start:
Moussa Cisse, Lausanne: The junior big man has been on a tear since the season started. His best performance to date came against Douglass. In the 87-66 win, Cisse finished with 32 points, 22 rebounds and 21 blocks.
Johnathan Lawson, Wooddale: The 6-foot-8 guard/forward has been putting up LeBron James-like numbers since the season started. Lawson had 23 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in the Cardinals’ season-opening win over Hillcrest. He had a 30-20-10 stat line in Wooddale’s overtime win at Christian Brothers. Against Olive Branch on Monday night, Lawson had 39 points and 16 rebounds.
Johnathan DeJurnett, Lausanne: The Evansville commit had 16 points and 10 rebounds against Douglass. Playing alongside Cisse, DeJurnett should see numbers like this each game.
Daniel Egbuniwe, FACS: The sophomore wing has scored in double figures in the Crusaders’ first three games of the season. He had 17 in the team’s 70-39 win over Rossville Christian Academy Monday night.
Patrick Smith Jr., Goodpasture: The junior guard had 32 points and six steals in the Cougars’ 62-56 win over Chattanooga Baylor. Smith Jr. had 20 points, eight steals and seven assists against the Hendersonville Cougars last Thursday.
Chandler Jackson, Christian Brothers: The sophomore point guard had 28 points, six rebounds and two assists and one steal against Wooddale. He had 24 points and eight rebounds in a road loss to White Station. His teammate, Reese McMullen, has been putting up solid numbers as well. The junior guard had 17 points and five assists against the Cardinals and 20 points and nine rebounds against the Spartans.
Kennedy Chandler, Briarcrest: The junior point guard had 29 points against Trezevant and 25 points in a win against KIPP.
Alex Anderson, Tipton-Rosemark Academy: The junior wing had 30 points and 12 rebounds in a home win over Arlington last Friday night. Anderson had 36 points and 16 rebounds in a two-point loss to Hamilton.
Madison Peaster, Arlington: The junior guard is starting to come along after the Tigers’ season-opening loss at Whitehaven. He had 12 points against Tipton-Rosemark Academy and 30 points and eight assists in a win against MUS.
Mason Miller, Houston: The junior wing had 19 points in a win against Mitchell, then had a 22-point performance against Olive Branch. His teammate, Alden Applewhite, got comfortable early against the ‘Quistors. He had 18 points in the win.
Caleb Smith, Fayette Academy: The junior guard had back-to-back double-digit performances to begin the season. Smith had 13 points in the 68-57 win over Westminster. He had 19 points in the 55-52 victory over Adamsville. His teammate, Austin Abernathy, came up big in the 78-26 win over Carroll, dropping a team-high 22 points.
Phil Horton, Fayette Ware: The senior wing had 28 points in the 83-76 win over South Gibson Tuesday night. His teammate, sophomore shooting guard Harmonta Griggs, had 16 points, two assists and two steals in the win.
