10 Best Things from Wakefield vs. Enloe

The Wakefield Wolverines and Enloe Eagles wasn't a season-opener to miss in the Raleigh area on Wednesday night. Wakefield trailed 40-27 at halftime but things came down to the wire in the end with the Wolverines winning the game 58-56. Here's a look at the 10 Best Things from the game.

Player of the Game: 2020 Vernon Fraley Jr., Wakefield

Fraley was a constant for the Wolverines all night in the scoring and rebounding department. Despite them trailing by 13 points at halftime, he kept pace on both ends and never slowed down, especially on the offensive boards. He finished with a team-high 21 points to go along with 12 rebounds and made a putback layup to tie things up late in the game. He's a 6-foot-5 forward that holds an offer from Salisbury University already.

Playmaker: 2020 Ta'shaud Alexander, Enloe

Alexander was a key reason that the Eagles had the lead for so long in the game in the early going. He made sure to get his teammates in the right spots for points and really fed Mekhi Williams-Henry in the first half. As the season progresses and he learns to maintain positive results on the offensive end, he'll be a senior guard to keep an eye on.

Unsung Hero: 2021 Harper Strickland, Wakefield

It was Strickland's first game as a starter as he enters his junior year and he looked good in game No. 1 of the season. Strickland was another strong frontcourt presence for Wakefield in their 13-point comeback victory. He battled on the boards and made the game-winning free throws with 0.7 seconds left to seal the game for the Wolverines. He's got nice length at 6-foot-5 that he puts to good use in the paint. As he learns to finish strong off the glass, he's a force to be reckoned with down low.

SharpShooter: 2022 Dakota Gordon, Enloe

Dakota Gordon made his presence felt in a hurry in the first half, knocking down three 3-pointers off the bench. He made things interesting with his team down 56-53 by draining a 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left in the regulation as well. Gordon was a shooter you didn't want to leave open on Wednesday night, making five 3-pointers to the tune of 15 points in the contest.

Fearless Attitude: 2020 Brenon Rogers, Wakefield

The adrenaline was probably going a bit too much for 2020 guard Brenon Rogers in the first half as he got three early fouls that caused him to miss the first half but he still kept his head up and made things happen when things got tough for the Wolverines.

Head Turner: 2022 Comeh Emuobor, Enloe

Comeh Emuobor is an intriguing prospect that turned heads early in the game with an And-1 dunk early on in the game. He finished with seven points but he's a 6-foot-3 guard that does a lot more than just score. He was strong on the boards and active on their defensive front. As he figures out how to make an impact on a consistent basis, he's a player to keep eyes on.

Right Place, Right Time: 2020 Tommy Petruccione, Wakefield

It was Tommy Petruccione's first varsity start on Wednesday night but he didn't let it deter him from making an impact, especially down the stretch. He scored five points in the second half as part of the Wolverines' comeback. He's a guard in their backcourt that's slowly figuring out how to make a difference on both ends by knowing where to be when things get tight.

Scorer: 2021 Mekhi Williams-Henry, Enloe

Mekhi Williams-Henry was one of the reasons the Eagles jumped out to such an early lead with his activity on the glass and finishing ability at the rim. He finished with 16 points but 13 of them came in the first half. The Wolverines did well to limit his touches in the second half. That's something for him to adjust to as the season progresses.

Defender: 2022 Jaxon Brown, Wakefield

Jaxon Brown is going to be a key piece off the bench for the Wolverines with his ability to force turnovers and play passing lanes on defense. He didn't have his strongest game offensively, granted he's only a sophomore, but he kept his cool on defense and was a reason his team was in a position to win down the stretch.

Glue Guy: 2020 Devin High, Enloe

In the early going, it looked like Devin High would have his way in the post as he got to the free-throw line early and got some Wakefield players in foul trouble. He finished with seven points, playing a solid option in the pick-and-roll game. He'll be a player that will play a bigger factor in games as he learns to stay effective for two halves of basketball.
