Notable among those were the host school’s point guard Brenton Knapper and forward Denim Dawson.
Knapper (who helped his team knock off Birmingham and Sonora) is as fast, on the dribble, as there is in the SoCal prep ranks. He’s one of the top half-dozen or so prospects at the position in the western Class of 2021.
And Dawson has the bounce and quickness to the rim that few possess in this class, regionally.
Birmingham had three of the best in the class at the event in 6-3 David Elliott, 6-4 Corey Cofield and 6-2 James Noble.
Those are three of the reasons that Birmingham could prove to be the best squad in the L.A. City Section in 2019-20.
Elliott is among the best “scorers” in the L.A. City and Cofield and Noble are among the region’s more spectacular athletes.
One of the more rapidly improving juniors in the west is 6-7 Luke Turner (pictured), whose jump shot and ability to beat defenders off the dribble will do much to keep defenses from stacking against Rancho Christian teammate Evan Mobley.
And any “most rapidly improving in the Class of 2021” category must also include La Habra Sonora guard Daniel Esparza.
Not only is he already one of the best scorers and playmakers in Orange County, he may also be the best player in the county that doesn’t play for a program that is part of the Trinity League.
And one of the biggest surprises at the event was Eastvale Roosevelt guard Godfrey Little, whose 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining helped his team stun Birmingham in one of the first two games played in the event.
