Known for his outside shooting, Johnson is an all-around offensive threat and has developed into a lock down defender as well. At 6’1, he can knock down 3-pointers, take it to the basket and has an emerging mid-range game.
“I love to go out and guard the best players on the court to compete,” he says. “I love to hustle so you will see me going in and getting boards … I love to get my teammates open and I love to win.”
After breaking the Andover school record for 3-pointers made in a season with 56, he followed with 49 3s as a sophomore and averaged 17 points, six rebounds and two assists. He says he was disappointed with his team’s performance and his personal performance last season and has high expectations for the upcoming year.
“I believe my freshman and sophomore years were rebuild seasons for my next two years,” Johnson said. “(I am)kind of disappointed in my last season but I know all I can do is progress.”
Johnson spent the offseason running with Kansas Pray N Play Players competing on the Adidas Gauntlet and says the experience helped his game grow.
“I have gotten some of my first looks from division 1 colleges and I got a lot better playing against the top talent over the country and finishing seventh overall in the Gauntlet,” Johnson said. “Over the summer I really focused on my midrange game and getting off the ground on every shot I take so I can shoot over anyone. The most improvement i’ve seen this past year is my athleticism and the ability to attack the rack.”
Armed with a deep and talented roster, Andover is poised for a big season in 2019-20 and a run at a deep post season run.
“I have already set my expectations high for not only myself but my team,” Johnson said. “There is no doubt in my mind that we will be competing for a state title this year. I really don’t think anyone should be able to beat us this year. I am feeling really confident and comfortable with my team this year. So don’t sleep on us we are coming for first a league title, then a sub-state title, and lastly a state title.”
Johnson says the biggest influence on his basketball career has been his parents and coaches.
“My biggest influence from a favorite player standpoint is steph curry and kyrie irving. I love their style of game and they have to battle when they are undersized,” he said. “An influence in my life right now would probably be both my parents and all of my coaches I’ve had over the past couple of years. They keep telling me I have something special and I can to get it if I want to.”
Johnson said he has drawn interest from several Division I programs including Santa Clara, Birmingham Alabama, UMKC, Abilene Christian and Abilene Christian, as well as Division II programs Rockhurst.
