Continue ReadingIt is often said that it is better to give than to receive. These four returning prep stars tend to agree. They were all in the top ten of Idaho’s assist leaders and will be returning for the 2020 season. Last year’s leader, Corban Fields was a sophomore and bodes well for his future. Will there be another Corban burst onto the scene? As we monitor this scenario, here are the prep stars who are the leading candidates to lead the state in assists.
Corban Fields
Junior Corban Fields led the state in assists as a sophomore. Heading into his junior year he is well positioned to repeat and improve on his 4.4 assists per game. He also leads those returning in assist to turnover ratio at 1.59, which indicate his efficiency as well as his volume as a passer.
Sebastian Eloe
Sebastian enters his senior year at Immaculate Conception Academy as the number two passer in the state as well as the second most prolific underclassman. Playing six fewer games than Corban, his clip of 4.2 assists per game came close to Fields, with the caveat that he turns the ball over more. Even with fewer games, Sebastian’s aggressive play led to 32 more turnovers last year. If he can protect the ball more, he has a good chance to improve on his assist numbers.
Issas Albor
Issas’ overall game is well-rounded and includes 3.5 assists per game. His turnovers match his assists, however, nearly one for one at 1.01. Issas is an opportunistic scorer and uses his ability to penetrate and threaten at the hoop to create opportunities for his teammates. Look for this to continue and improve in efficiency in 2020.
Josh Cucchiari
Josh is a true pass-first point guard who is skilled at setting up defences with his pick-and-roll prowess. He averaged 2.9 assists per game with an assist to turnover ratio of 1.29. He is a player whose stats do not reflect his floor leadership and his importance running the team. That being said, look for Josh’s assist numbers to jump in his senior season and don’t be surprised to see a spike in his scoring numbers.
