Here are some teams that could show the most improvement from a season ago:
Grand Forks Red River
The Roughriders have gone to state each of the last two seasons, and they return almost every key guy from last year’s rotation. So the end result of a state tournament berth this season may not be a huge improvement, but the journey could be a lot smoother. They went 11-10 in the regular season and were somewhat streaky. With four starters and all the bench guys back, this team could be a 15-plus win team throughout the regular season.
Dickinson
Dickinson won just seven games last year, serving as meat for the teams in the top-heavy WDA to feast on. The Midgets could double that total this winter as they return three all-league caliber players in Jaiden Wright, Talon Klatt and Kobe Krenz plus a solid core of juniors who played as underclassmen. Defense will be a big key as they allowed more than 70 points per game but they’ve got the horses to compete with the typical top teams this winter.
Fargo North
Fargo North showed it could be dangerous last year with several good wins and a few other losses where they put scares into the top teams in the EDC. In Cayden Rickard and Carson Critchley, North has one of the best backcourts in the state and the firepower to improve on their nine-win campaign of 2018-19. If they can defend and rebound better, they’ll be dangerous in the second tier of the league.
Bismarck Legacy
Similar to Grand Forks Red River, Bismarck Legacy was a middle team through most of last season but captured postseason success in the WDA tournament before winning a game in the state tournament. With three starters back including Nick Kupfer and Rhett Clements plus a host of solid young talent in house, the Sabers could make a run at top-four finish in the WDA.
