With most of the core of that team back, Dickinson Trinity will head into the 2019-20 season with expectations to contend in Region 7 and potentially make a run at the state tournament.
GO-TO GUY: Matthew Stafford
Stafford emerged as the team’s best scorer a year ago, combining strong outside shooting with the strength and athleticism to get to the paint and finish in traffic. Stafford wasn’t always the most consistent guy a year ago, but showed on numerous occasions that he can be explosive and put up points in bunches. If he irons out that consistency a little more as a senior, he’s got a chance to be an all-state type guy in Class B.
BREAKOUT CANDIDATE: Jacob Daniel
The Titans return five guys from the rotation a year ago but because the team played a lot of young guys and graduate two starters, there will be some opportunity for guys to step up into new roles. One of those guys figures to be Jacob Daniel. He was a role player last year taking a back seat to Cole Fitterer and Stafford on the perimeter. Both those guys are back, but Daniel should see a lot of minutes playing with them and given his shooting ability, he’ll have an opportunity to knock down a lot of open shots.
QUESTION: Can the Titans score enough?
As good as Dickinson Trinity was a year ago, its offense was a weakness. In six losses, the Titans averaged just 42 points per game. They only averaged 50 points per game on the year anyways and while their defense should be strong as it traditionally is, being able to generate points in hotly-contested games will once again be the key to unlocking this team’s potential.
OUTLOOK
Dickinson Trinity was one of the best non state tournament teams in Class B last year. With a majority of that core set to return, the Titans should be strong again in 2019-20. Stafford and Cole Fitterer form one of the best backcourts in Class B and while they’ll have to find some bodies up front, the foundation is there for another 18-22 win season.
