There has been much discussion revolving around what kind of coach Juwan Howard will be. The consensus seems to agree that he is a players coach. Coach Howard has gained a reputation as the type of leader that young men respect and want to play for. They believe in him and his ability to get them to reach their highest potential.
The senior class in Michigan has many talented players and leaders. Could any of them be the next Juwan Howard? Could any return home and be a high school basketball coach in the future? Are there any seniors that may someday create excitement by being a ‘players coach’?
Here are some players in the class of 2020 that could end up as the next Juwan Howard and come back to coach high school basketball in Michigan:
Trevor Arico (2020, 6’1″, CG, Saline)
Arico is a high IQ player and a lethal shooter. I’ve actually seen him working and teaching the game to kids, and they love the way he approaches it. Arico respects and enjoys the game, and that translates well for him as a player and as a future coach.
Wes Gibbs (2020, 5’10”, CG, Cheryl Stockwell Prep)
Whenever you talk to Gibbs about his game, he always wants to tell you about the success of a teammate or an opponent. But lets not forget, he can play himself. Gibbs is an efficient player who can guide a team. His selfless nature and basketball knowledge could make him a players coach someday.
Scooby Johnson (2020, 6’7″, SF, Benton Harbor)
Johnson is a hard working grinder. His work ethic and toughness have made him a top prospect nationwide. He’s a machine that plays both ends of the floor. Players now and in the future, respect his hustle and will want to be on his team.
Luke Laketa (2020, 6’4″, G/F, Hanover Horton)
Just watch the kid play. He’s smart with the ball and understands the ebbs and flows of the game. Laketa can do it all and thrives in so many aspects of the game. These are all things that could translate into a successful coaching career.
Zach Maynard (2020, 6’4″, SG, Brother Rice)
Maynard just gets it. He knows and understands all of the off court nuances of being a high level high school player. Maynard is a team player that can shoot from deep and create off the dribble. He’s the type of guy that can lead and educate our future players.
Mark Miller (2020, 6’4″, G/F, Grand Blanc)
Miller is a star, but doesn’t demand the spotlight. He’s willing to do all the little things in order for his team to win. Miller will be the first to hit the floor for a loose ball. Players will someday watch film of “Coach Miller” and want to run through walls for him.
