Coral Springs High struggled to a sub-.500 season in coach Jarrett Williams' first year at the helm in 2018-19.

The Colts appear to have re-tooled -- just how much we will have to wait and see -- judging by their 2-2 mark at the Florida High School Team Camp at the DS Sportsplex in Deerfield Beach. Their high-water mark was playing highly-touted West Oaks Academy to a 30-28 first half before eventually falling.

"They battled," Williams said of his club. "Obviously West Oaks is a tough team -- it’s a prep school. They’re good. Those guys are confident. Those guys, they attack. I felt like our guys stepped up to the challenge. They battled. We just had some key turnovers. Our group is kind of just getting together now."

This is a new group. That is because several transfers are leading Coral Springs' resurgence:

6-5 2020 Jordan Smith (pictured), who came over from Piper;

6-4 2020 Greg Gordon, a transfer from Niles North in Illinois;

6-6 2020 Matthew Dolce, from Taravella High.

Smith's quickness gave West Oaks problems. He is athletic, shifty and had several exceptional no-look passes. "We’re coming together pretty strong," Smith said. "We’re a new team. We’re building right now, trying to get better over the summer so in the season we can win states."

"He definitely sees the floor," added coach Williams. "He’s scrappy. He’s a dog … he plays hard the whole game. Good kid. He’s got a good attitude. I think he’s going to be a big addition to our team."

Gordon has been Coral Springs' best player all summer. He excels in transition, is Springs' second-best passer and cleans up a lot of the mistakes.

Dolce brings versatility and spreads the floor. He has the length to play inside but can step out and hit jump shots.

6-4 rising senior Kerns Monvilus returns for the Colts. He had been plugged in at power forward the past few years but Williams said, "This year we’ve kind of given him more guard responsibilities and that’s totally opened up his whole game. So, he is new as a guard but he is improving very fast and I feel like that's for the next level going to be his position."
