Prospect Spotlight: Dominic Woods (2020)
One of the fastest rising prospects in the Class of 2020 is Dominic Woods from Serra High School. He’s playing with Los Angeles Elite on the AAU circuit and he’s making a name for himself as a deadly wing scorer.
Woods had himself a big weekend last month at the Terrific 24 event in Georgia. He showed off his ability to score at all three levels. He had another strong weekend at the Prep Hoops Hustle in the Sun event and has since started to garner the attention of Division 1 colleges.
“Yeah I got a few D1 schools interested,” Woods told Prep Hoops. “It’s San Diego State, Sacramento State, Seattle, UC Riverside, and Army.”
It’s not hard to imagine that as he continues to put up strong numbers and develop his game, that more schools will begin to take interest. Although he’s more of a scoring guard, he can be a facilitator and make plays for his teammates and a combo guard is where he might project at the college level.
He’s got his whole senior year ahead of him, but he’s already got a sense of what he’s looking for when that time comes to choose which college he’ll eventually take his talents to.
“Far away from here. Just far away from here, it doesn’t really matter,” Woods said. “I just kind of want to get out of California and see other places.”
For now, the AAU circuit will go into dormant mode until the July live period. Many players will now re-join their high school teams for summer tournaments and events. Woods is going to continue to work and he hopes that as July rolls around, he’ll have some offers.
“By June, we go back to high school. I’m hoping to come out of there and into July with at least a few offers,” Woods said. “So I can try to grow some more in the live period in July and go from there.”
While he’s a dominant scorer, there are aspects of his game that he is trying to work on. He’s identified which parts of his offensive ability could use a little bit of fine tuning.
He’s already a tough cover for any defender, and if he addresses and strengthens the areas he wants to work on, he’s going to be a nightmare for any defender to guard.
“Off the dribble, right now off the dribble it’s a lot easier to guard me,” Woods said. “I feel like if I’m catching it on the wing, there’s really nothing you can do. I’m either going to shoot it or go by you. Off the dribble, I have to work on that part.”
Aside from his goals for improving his game and trying to solidify a few college offers, looking ahead to his final year of high school, he’s got some big goals he hopes to accomplish.
“I’m trying to win CIF, I’m trying to win,” Woods said. “Last year we lost in the first round. I just want go from there and try and win CIF.”
