Here is a look at the players that stood out to me the most on a consistent basis.
Andrew Thelwell (Oviedo Master’s)
Talk about an instant impact. 2020 6’3″ guard Andrew Thelwell officially transferred over to Oviedo Master’s on Monday from Orangewood Christian. He immediately makes the Eagles a better team with his impressive scoring prowess. Solid throughout the day with as a slasher and 3-point shooter, Thelwell saved his best for the final game of the day. He scored all seven points in a single overtime win over Fleming Island which included a buzzer beating 3 from the top of the key. Thelwell is going to make some Division I or Division II program awfully happy.
Note: 2020 6’4″ guard Corey Sawyer was equally as impressive leading the flow of the offense and taking good shots.
DeMari Henderson & Ja’Cari Henderson (Sanford Seminole)
Known as the athletic twins, 2022 Sanford Seminole pair DeMari Henderson and Ja’Cari Henderson were electric for a very fun Seminoles group. In a win over a lengthier Tampa Catholic team, dunks came aplenty from the Henderson twins and from 2020 6’0″ guard Ladarron Cleveland. At 6’1″, the Henderson twins are both super crafty passers, who have developed handles and seasoned vision in transition. Seminole will be hard to beat on a nightly basis with athletes at all five positions including the twins at the forefront.
Joe Stubbs (Santa Fe Catholic)
One of the top athletes in Polk County, 2020 6’4″ guard Joe Stubbs is getting better and better as the alpha for Santa Fe Catholic. Always vocal and looking to run the floor, he is rarely tired and is active on both ends of the floor. Stubbs wants to finish at the rim with high flying dunks, but his shot selection has improved and he’s starting to really figure it out overall. His dribble drive moves have also gotten better.
Walter Clayton (Lake Wales)
The clear-cut leader of Lake Wales, 2021 6’3″ guard Walter Clayton has become an electric player to watch. He has been a core starter and point man since his freshman season and right now, he’s clicking on all cylinders. Whether it comes as a driver on the break, a shooter or passer, Clayton is doing it all. He’s dunking with ease now and his athleticism is quite clear.
Marcus Frazier (Monsignor Pace)
2020 Monsignor Pace guard Marcus Frazier had a booming dunk against Lake Wales that erupted his squad. From that point forward, he played with confidence and used his steady handles to control his offense. In a later game against McKeel, Frazier was attacking with his length and dishing out some high IQ passes. His shooting touch is solid as well especially since he can create for himself often. Frazier is an underrated prospect that deserves more attention.
Johni Broome (Tampa Catholic)
The progression that 2020 6’8″ Tampa Catholic forward Johni Broome has made over the past year might be one of the best in the entire state. The big man is fluid and knows his role in the post. He arrived from Plant City last spring and it took some time for him to gel with the speedy and athletic Crusaders team. By mid-season, he was starting and averaging double digits with ease. Broome hasn’t looked back and he is a double double candidate this fall.
Austin Lewis (Bishop Snyder)
Bishop Snyder may be losing 2020 Tennessee commit Corey Walker to Virginia Hargrave, but the Cardinals have some players to watch and will be getting more size soon. 2021 6’1″ guard Austin Lewis was the steadiest of the shorthanded Bishop Snyder bunch against South Sumter. He was rebounding and crashing the boards and hitting some really tough floaters. Other players to watch for the Cardinals is 2020 6’0″ guard Gyasi Powell, a quick and mature point man and 2022 6’3″ guard Jalen Gilmore, a confident ballhandler and knockdown shooter.
Sebastian Astor (Fleming Island)
2020 6’0″ Fleming Island guard Sebastian Astor is used to scoring a lot. He did it plenty for a Golden Eagles group that made a Class 8A state semifinal appearance a season ago. Astor has the ball on a string and can do whatever he wants as the leader of the offense as a gifted passer and elusive attacker. He scored in bunches in a matchup with Tampa Catholic and it is obvious, he can play somewhere at the next level. Astor is in for a very good senior campaign.
