Spring Combine Recapture: John Townsend
Stewarts Creek consistently sends a deep crew of campers to PrepHoopsTN/AboveTheRimGym Combine events. John Townsend is the latest representative.
Class of 2021 John Townsend was measured with a 74″ wingspan.John Townsend, 5’9″ WG (Stewarts Creek) — 2021
- Standing Reach — 91″ or 7’7″
- 5’9″ 150 pounds
- Wingspan — 6’2″
- Vertical — 28.0″
- Hand Length — 7″
- Lane Agility — 12.40, 12.64
- Spring Combine Ranking — #22
John Townsend is 5-foot-9 as an outgoing high school freshman. His wingspan is an encouraging +5 and lane agility is strong. For a guard Townsend needs to keep developing his bounce and explosion in the lane. Obviously, defenders only get taller and more foreboding as he climbs the basketball ladder.
The Stewarts Creek guard moves well laterally. His mobility is slightly above average and it is clear weight training exists in his off-time. Already Townsend is developing shoulders and again the lower body balance suggests he will be a strong defender at the varsity level next winter.
Townsend finished the event as the 22nd best player in the building. These rankings are not an indicator predicting future success, rather they only report how well he did on the day. Townsend, like several of the young guards suffered from playing alongside selfish guards. This happens often at showcase-style events and it disallowed Townsend from showing off all that he can and will be able to do.
Still, John Townsend is a player with promise once he gets his handle up and attacks with more purpose.
