Here is a look at five of those top prospects in the Class of 2019 who have enjoyed excellent careers on the basketball court as well.
Marcus Washington (Trinity): The 6’2″ wide receiver was the Most Valuable Player of the Under Armour All-American Game in Florida in January. The Texas-bound Washington has been a four-year starter for the Titans and a big part of their emergence as a state power in basketball. As a senior, Washington is averaging 10 points, five rebounds and two steals while shooting 52 percent from the field. He scored a season-high 31 points against Soldan in the third-place game of the Belleville East Tournament. Trinity is currently 22-3 and ranked No. 3 in the Class 3 rankings, and the No. 1 seed in the District 7 tournament.
Isaiah Williams (Trinity): The talented athlete has been a four-year starter at quarterback in football and at point guard for the basketball team as both teams have reached statewide prominence. The Under Armour All-American is headed to Illinois on a football scholarship after leading Trinity to the Class 3 state championship. On the basketball court, he is averaging eight points and four assists as a senior for the Titans, who are currently 22-3 and ranked No. 3 in the state in Class 3.
Moses Okpala (Ladue): The 6’7″ 250-pound Okpala was a standout two-way lineman and one of the anchors of a Ladue defense that powered its way to the Class 4 state championship in football. He will play football for the University of Illinois in the fall. He has been a pillar of strength in the low post for Ladue’s basketball team that is currently 17-7 and a No. 1 seed in the upcoming Class 4, District 6 tournament. As a senior, Moses is averaging 7.3 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 52 percent from the field. He scored a season-high 17 points in the Rams’ upset victory over then No. 1 and undefeated Webster Groves last month.
Jack Buford (Lutheran North) – The hulking 6’5″ 330-pound offensive lineman was an All-State and All-Metro performer for the Crusaders football team. He was the first of several top prospects from the St. Louis area to commit to the University of Missouri. He just concluded a very solid basketball career in which he averaged 9.5 points and 6.1 rebounds in helping the Crusaders to a share of the Metro League championship.
D.J. Miller (John Burroughs): The 6’0″ Miller was a standout two-way performer for the Bombers at wide receiver and cornerback, thus earning a scholarship from Iowa State, where he recently signed a letter of intent. He has been a four-year starter for the Bombers on the basketball court. As a senior, he is averaging 11.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.1 steals in helping lead the Bombers to a 14-10 record. He scored a season-high 28 points against Hazelwood East in the Legends of Winter Classic in late December.
