“A lot of emotions,” said Connor Jordan. “Definitely the biggest shot of my career at that magnitude. It kind of felt like all of the work had paid off in a sense.”
Jordan was one of many Friday night stars.
“I thought we struggled offensively at times,” said Jordan. “(Especially) in the second and third quarters. I felt our defense was very good. We rebounded it very well at the end of the game.”
Sevier County pulled a mild upset of Morristown West preventing an All-Morristown championship game. Sevier County won, 62-56.
Tall wing guard Wesley Maples (PrepHoopsTN #165 in 2020) wants his Sevier County Smoky Bears to collect retribution. Morristown East (21-8) defeated SCHS (20-6) earlier this season, but the higher stakes loss to Morristown East came exactly a year ago to the date.
The Hurricanes dispatched of Maples’ Smoky Bears, 50-46, in the 2AAA District Tournament Semifinal. Late January ’18 was the last time SCHS beat Morristown East. They expect much from tonight’s scramble.
“I expect hard work and effort on every single play,” shared Maples Friday night. “I expect us all to know our assignments every single time down the court.”
Player Scouting Report
Connor Jordan knows basketball. He talks basketball like a veteran coach and evaluator.
“They have Wes Maples, #24,” said Connor Jordan of Sevier County. “Kind of their best player. Do it all. Lanky. 6’4″.”
Maples is having a nice junior season. In fact, Maples surpassed 1,000 career points during the SCHS win over Morristown West Friday evening.
“They have #25 Camden McElhaney,” shared Connor Jordan. “(He is) 6’5″ or 6’6”. Shoots it good from three. Their other big 3 would be Cam Burden, a sophomore that plays in the post. Can handle it outside. Likes to take it on bigger posts.”
Jordan and Maples are confident in their teams to advance after the regional draw is set.
“I think we are very capable of making the regional finals,” predicted Wesley Maples back in January. “We beat Dobyns-Bennett in a preseason game who is a big contender on the other side. So, yes I think we are very capable of making a good playoff run.”
Both Connor and Wesley anticipate Dobyns-Bennett to be the most daunting team from the other side.
“Dobyns-Bennett is a team we have struggled with in the past,” explained Connor Jordan. We lost to them by 6 and by 4. Tennessee High and Science Hill are both solid. We beat SH twice this year and beat Tennessee High.”
Consecutive wins over each Morristown power requires a win tonight. Confidence for SCHS is at a season high.
Morristown East is one of the hottest teams in the state.
“I am coming ready,” said Maples.
