The Mavs, which re-branded and revamped the program in 2017 when Tyler Cleveland took over, will have plenty of Iowa’s best talent on display this spring and summer as part of the Prep Hoops Circuit’s Hard Work Region.
Cleveland, who has been with the Mavs for eight years now, is excited about the spring and summer ahead, and says the goal is for his guys to have the best experience possible.
“The goal of the Mavericks is to provide a great environment on and off the court for all of our athletes and families — we strive to make it the best experience overall,” said Cleveland.
“We will be a very strong group through the spring & summer of 2019, as we’ve added some nice pieces. We want to make sure that the kids are getting better as basketball players, and also as young men.”
John SteffenThe 17U Mavericks squad will be an especially strong one for the Mavs, headlined by a pair of Camanche standouts, Caleb Delzell and Cam Soenksen. John Steffen and Ozzie Meiborg will round out the back-court, they’re certainly two of Iowa’s best 2020 guards. Lucas Hayes, Tre McCrary and Cooper Medinger will also be guys to keep a close eye on for this ultra-talented unit.
New faces will headline the 16U unit, Kyle Kelley is a 6-foot-4 guard from West Delaware who’s averaging 14.5 points per game this season. Ethan O’Donnell is a 6’4 guard who’s scoring and assisting well for Iowa City Liberty.
The 15U squad will feature yet another standout from Camanche, freshman Zach Erwin. Don Bosco guard Kobe Allen projects to be a star player as well. “That class will be a very special one we believe, and will surprise many people,” said Cleveland.
With an already established program and some of the best talent in Iowa taking the floor for the Mavs, it could be a special 2019 ahead for the program.
“We feel that we will be very competitive at all levels day in and day out, and will be a program that people won’t want to run into when tournament game schedules come out.” said Cleveland, who is eager to get started in the Hard Work Region.
“Prep Hoops does a great job of promoting basketball in Iowa and we felt that as a program it would be the best option for us. We had multiple offers to play on different “circuits” but in the end we are 100 percent confident that we made the correct choice with the PH Circuit.”
