SANTA ANA, CA.—The 24th Nike Extravaganza is yet again chock full of quality players and teams and right off the bat Oak Hill Academy demonstrated their prowess with a dismantling of Santa Margarita 94-67. Cole Anthony (Oak Hill Academy) was the headliner of the night, but it would be 6-foot-3 junior Cam Taylor (Oak Hill Academy) who would put on a show reminiscent of former Detroit Piston star Joe Dumars.
Cole Anthony (Oak Hill Academy)
2019, PG, 6-foot-2, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: There was speculation that Anthony would not suit up because of an ankle injury. We’ll not only did he play, he exhibited the skill set why many believe he is the No. 1 point guard prospect in the country. Despite his sore ankle, he got whereever he needed to go and with ease. His explosiveness off the dribble is high-level and his finishing ability is big time as well. He hit jump shots, but his shot appeared to be mechanical, but he handed out a bevy of impressive assists.
Onyeka Okongwu (Chino Hills)
2019, PF, 6-foot-7, 230 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the bigger snubs in McDonald’s AA Game history was “Big O.” The ultra-skilled 4-man with nimble feet, soft hands, and an array of offensive moves displayed why he’ll make an immediate impact at USC this fall. One of the more underrated skills on display was his passing prowess.
Makur Maker (Orange Lutheran)
2019, PF, 6-foot-11, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: Maker had his usual perimeter skill set on display which makes him such an intriguing prospect. He can handle the ball in transition, flick passes to open teammates, and knock in the occasional jump shot. However, he rarely ventures into the post and his fundamentals need attention as he has a bad habit bring the ball down before finishing.
Kofi Cockburn (Oak Hill Academy)
2019, C, 6-foot-9, 275 pounds
Joel’s Take: The most physically imposing center I’ve seen this season has been Cockburn. The Illinois commit is a massive human being with good hands, incredible strength, and a solid touch that extends to the freethrow line. His rebounding prowess is noteworthy and he knows how to create space. Moving forward he needs to continue to hone the fundamentals on the block (bend knees and play on balance), but overall he is a load to deal with.
Jarod Lucas (Los Altos)
2019, SG, 6-foot-2, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Lucas continues to climb the latter of the California State scoring list. When you’re mentioned in the same breath with former So-Cal standouts like Tracy Murray, Casey Jacobsen, and Jrue Holiday, you’re doing something special—and that is exactly what Lucas is doing with his consistent scoring outbursts.
