Yaya Keita 6’9″ DeSmet (’21) – The athletic big was a dominant force in the Spartans’ championship victory over Hazelwood Central. Yaya scored 13 points and grabbed 26 rebounds in a sheer display of dominance on the boards. He gobbled up 20 defensive rebounds as he limited the Hawks to one shot and one shot only during the evening. I was very impressed with his ability to rebound out of his area.
Jayce Catchings 6’3″ Wentzville Liberty (’20) – The talented wing scored a game-high 29 points in the Eagles victory over Parkway South in the third-place game. Despite facing a box-and-one defense, Catchings was able to get his buckets because he can score in a variety of ways. He knocked down 3-pointers, posted up for points in the paint, hit the offensive boards and got to the free throw line.
Sekou Gassamma 6’10” DeSmet (’21) – The long and athletic forward scored 13 points in the championship game victory against Hazelwood Central. Gassamma did a nice job of establishing his position in the post against smaller defenders and got buckets on a couple of drop steps. He also loves to run the court at every opportunity and block shots.
Aahmod Scarbrough 6’0″ Hazelwood Central (’21) – The athletic lefty scored a team-high 14 points in the Hawks loss to DeSmet in the championship game. Scarbrough is a slasher who plays with a ton of energy on both ends of the court. He is a strong rebounder for his size. He is also developing a stroke from 3-point range as he knocked down a couple of triples from the left wing.
Ryan Campbell 6’2″ Lafayette (’20) – A very good offensive player who scored a game-high 20 points against Parkway Central in the fifth place game. He is a very good 3-point shooter who showed the ability to knock down the deep ball off the catch or off the dribble after a nice escape move. He has good handles and solid passing ability.
Jaden Betton 5’9″ (Liberty ’22) and Tevin Gowins 5’8 Hazelwood Central (’22) – A pair of freshmen guards who were very impressive on Friday night. Both are quick and good ball handlers who play with a lot of poise of moxie for youngsters who play such an important position on the floor.
