This first session is at Hargrave, with sessions to come at Fork Union and Massanutten as well this year. There were six teams competing, including the three above along with Mount Zion Prep (MD), Spire Institute Prep (OH), and the Andrew Osbourn International Sports Academy (ISA). Here’s a look at part one of the standouts from the first day.
Caleb Mauldin | 6’8” C | Fork Union
Mauldin may not be the biggest name recruit at the event, but he was fantastic in the paint in FUMA’s win over Spire Institute. He dominated in the post throughout the game, and stepped up huge in the second half scoring 13 of his 25 points after halftime, but it was how efficient he was after the break going 4-for-4 from the field and 5-for-5 from the line. He showed good touch and moves in the post, great understanding of angles and the ability to step out and shoot the deep ball. He finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds in the win.
David Ware | 6’4” WF | Fork Union
Ware is the do-it-all guy for FUMA, and he showed that in their win by stuffing the stat sheet and playing with high energy all day. Ware was great attacking the basket, showing a solid midrange pull-up and floater, and he also was a crafty finisher around the basket. He moves well without the ball and understands spacing, and he’s always around the basket and the basketball. He finished with 19 points and six rebounds in the win.
Jaylin Reed | 6’2” WG | Fork Union
He came out on fire and didn’t stop throughout the game, and on paper it was an incredibly efficient game as far as scoring for Reed. The former Miller School star opened the game with a three, and he hit another big one late with Spire coming back and taking the lead. The two guard did a great job getting to the line and finishing, and he didn’t take any bad shots throughout the game. He finished with 16 points on just five shots, going 3-for-5 from the field and 8-for-8 from the line.
Marcus Gibbs | 6’0” G | Spire Institute (OH)
The high scorer in the three games, Gibbs poured in an impressive 34 points, including 24 in the second half to help bring Spire back before they eventually lost. Gibbs can get hot quickly and fill it up, especially from deep where he hit five triples in the second half. He was relentless attacking closeouts and getting in the paint, where he can finish in traffic and get to the line. His scorers mentality was on full display the whole game.
Shamar Dillard | 6’6” WG | Spire Institute (OH)
The Eastern Michigan commit looked phenomenal when the game started, as Dillard showed that he has good range and he’s a big time athlete. A super long wing, Dillard went way above the rim for a number of alley-oops, and he hit three from downtown in the first half, each from close to NBA range. He has the skill, athleticism and size to make an immediate impact next year in the MAC, and if he didn’t struggle with foul trouble he likely would have scored much more than the 19 he did on the game.
Gary Solomon | 6’5” G | Spire Institute (OH)
On a team that lacks a true point guard, Solomon is the best playmaker with the ball in his hands for Spire. He has good size on the perimeter, he can put it on the deck and has blow-by speed that allows him to get in the lane. In transition he thrives with the ball in his hands, as he can create his own shot and score from all three levels, and he was a good passer that saw the game well. He finished with 16 points, six assists and five rebounds.
Josh Moore | 6’1” G | Andrew Osborne ISP
The combo guard came out on fire, hitting three from behind the arc to start the game and help ISP get out to an early lead against Massanutten. He showed that he can shoot the basketball, but he showed a lot more too on both ends. He showed he can handle it, rebound and defend, and he finished with an impressive 13 points, four rebounds and three steals.
