Roncalli’s Revival
Last season was the culmination of everything the last four years had built into for Roncalli. They were loaded with seniors, seniors that are now on college campuses already impacting the roster. But now, it is a little bit of a mess that might be in the beginning stages of a revival.
With a roster that only is home to two seniors, Jacob Kenney and Brandon Berger, Roncalli has a roster that could grow throughout the season and hit it’s fever pitch by next year. They have guys like Aidan Looney, Anthony Donahue, and Johnny Brunk on the perimeter and Daniel Asher and Alex Stroud in the post. The only glaring issue with the roster composition right now is that they don’t have a true point guard. They played Brunk on the ball most of the night and it went better than you would think but obviously not ideal.
Brunk has progressed, as has Asher, and Stroud and Donahue give you usable weapons in the post and as a perimeter shooter. Against Decatur Central, you got that vibe that with time these guys could come together and present a very capable group. While only 1-3, they showed enough to take down Guerin Catholic, a quality team, this year. Will be interesting to come back at the end of the season and see how far these guys and this team has developed.
Crazy Scores
Of all the days in a season, I don’t think it is going out on a limb to say this might be the craziest one this year. We are only 3 weeks in.
So far, there hasn’t been much to come out of the demolishing that Pike just put on Center Grove but here is what you need to know. At the end of the first quarter it was Pike up 25-6. Halftime it was 49-15 and after 3 it was 68-29. Pike finished the game off winning 88-44 in one of the most unbelievable outcomes of this season to date.
Linton-Stockton also beat Barr-Reeve on Friday night. However, considering they were down 13-2 after the first quarter, you would have never saw that coming. By mid-way through the third quarter Linton had retaken the lead and ended up winning, by four points.
Also, looking up in the Fort Wayne area, Concordia just beat Carroll, 40-37. Carroll, who is supposed to be one of the best teams in the state this year, is now 1-3 with losses to Penn, East Noble, and now Concordia.
Oh, and last but not least. New Castle, who we thought might have to be feast or famine from behind the arc, not only went on to beat Shelbyville, they won by 35 points and put up 89 on the scoreboard. The stat sheet from that one will likely show a ton of threes made.
Quick Hitters:
- Alexandria keeps looking solid this year with a big win over Blackford. Sophomore Luke Brown had 29 points in the loss. This is their first loss at 4-1 while Alexandria joins them at 4-1 with the win.
- Bloomington South got a much needed win over Southport, 64-49. They did so on the back of Anthony Leal who put up a career high 38 points. Now, they don’t need him to do that every game, but his scoring ability and consistency are likely needed to keep this team in those tough games.
- We just got done talking about Columbus North being for real and they kept it up moving to 4-1 with a win over Franklin Central in overtime. Maybe a little too close to call with Fishers and Columbus East coming up next.
- In a tune up for tomorrow’s game against Hamilton Southeastern, Culver Acadmies pulled off a low scoring battle with Brebeuf Jesuit to pick up their first major victory this season. It also gives them a win over a possible 3A foe they could see in the State Finals.
- Evansville Bosse got a huge win over Princeton, 64-56. Bosse is now 2-1 but get right back at things tomorrow with Forest Park at the Ford Center in Evansville. Go 2-0 this weekend and reevaluate this group heading into a monster week next week with Memorial, Washington, and Gary West.
- Well, Floyd Central got some more revenge with a win over rival New Albany, 44-37. Now 5-0, teams better start taking this group for real as they has 3 massive wins over good 4A opponents.
- Bishop Dwenger knocked off Homestead on Friday. That is a big win for Dwenger who is now 2-0. Homestead has had nothing but quality wins all year long so some respect for Bishop Dwenger in this one.
- Heritage Hills keeps on rolling. They might be one of the best offensive teams in the state as they were averaging in the mid 70s but just got done putting up 101 against North Posey. Keep this team in mind next time rankings come around. Murray Becher had 30 points in the win.
- Heading into the season, it was hard to see if Cardinal Ritter was going to be able to really compete in their Sectional or not. But, they are 1-2 with their two losses being to Brebeuf Jesuit by just 7 points and tonight’s loss to Attucks by just 2 points. All told, that is pretty impressive based off of what they lost this past offseason.
- LaVille, who went a long ways undefeated last season, got a win over one of the few teams that could actually give them a loss this year in Winamac. However, look for their holiday tournament at Park Tudor to be the real test as they start off against Indianapolis Howe.
- Lawrence North got a rebound win over Brownsburg, 47-44. More of a physical, grind it out game where they got some more help from their other guards on the team but their inside presence is still missing.
- Logansport moves to 3-0 and get their first win over a quality opponent in Muncie Central. Leading the way was Will Penny who had 35 points and 10 rebounds in the narrow win.
- Munster does it again, getting another big win over East Chicago Central. They now are 5-0 and got this win with a Jevon Morris three at the buzzer.
- One of the biggest surprises to date is that of Plainfield who, with a win over Martinsville, moved to 4-0 on the season. Next weeks games against Perry Meridian and Danville loom large.
- Richmond got a huge win at home against Marion. They moves to 2-2 but get a win that could spur them moving forward. There are some winnable, but tough games coming up for the Red Devils.
- North Harrison’s schedule ended up not doing them any favors as they have played Heritage Hills, Corydon Central, and Silver Creek all in a row and have now lost all three after Friday night as they move to 1-3. The hope is the remaining schedule that gets quite a bit easier after Brownstown Central on December 14th.
- Southridge keeps it moving, winning a pair this week after their 51-43 win over Tell City. Quality win and gets the prepared before taking on Evansville Mater Dei tomorrow at the Ford Center.
