Recruiting Report: Ross Welch (2019)
The upcoming Fall and Winter are going to be key for all 2019 recruits in terms of their recruitment. However, it is more vital for some more than others. For Cathedral’s Ross Welch, he’s in that group after having missed significant time with an injury this past July.
Fully recovered from a hand/wrist injury that kept him out of July AAU for the most part, Welch is now looking to make up for lost time as he looks ahead to his season with one of the top high school teams in the state and a potential 4A State Contender.
Welch should be a big part of that group as a 6’7 forward with some ability to play on the wing and shoot. Really good in the post because of his agility and quickness where he can rebound pretty well and finish around the rim faced up. However, that shooting ability will be pretty big for his stock as a guy that will draw in a variety of small school programs.
Some of those schools have kept on him still through the injuries with Wabash and Franklin College still staying in touch. He’s had interest from some higher level programs in the past and would expect those to come back around pretty quickly once he’s back and playing games this Fall.
Part of the reason for that is his academics. As one of the 5 best academic students in our database for 2019 prospects from Indiana, Ross has the ability to get into any school he wants and when you take that into account with his size and skill when healthy, he’s an easy take for a ton of schools.
At the next level, Ross will be a guy that could give NAIA and DII programs some solid minutes early on with his range. As he acclimates to his defensive assignments, that playing time should increase. Later on in his career, he would be a guy that could potentially impact inside and out, with it trending more towards a perimeter scorer with rebounding ability in the middle of the floor.
