Devault Makes The Call For Austin Peay
The season for commitments is close in hand and there have been four alone this week. The latest of which is Evansville Memorial (IN) forward Sam Devault. He made the call on Thursday to head to Austin Peay.
Devault, a 6’9 wing shooter, is one of the more versatile and potentially diverse players in the 2019 class for Indiana. He’s built to play as a new-age stretch forward and at Austin Peay and the Ohio Valley Conference, OVC, Devault could be a really good player.
Sam skill and game are built more as a perimeter player and at his size, he’s got the ability to play as a four-man and provide shooting in a very good shooting league. The league isn’t built around massive post players but more skill and lean frames which plays right into Devault’s body.
The biggest thing to watch this winter for Devault is his ability to take the ball and create into the lane. He showed that with some regularity last season for Memorial but never really got to do that as much in AAU with UA Grind 2019. If he can really solidify that part of his game, things could really springboard for him.
That aspect is one that could really allow him to have more than just one way to score at the next level. Having shown the slashing ability a bit last season, the hope is that it will be a staple of his game before he heads to college. If it is, it might not be in Year 1 at Austin Peay but maybe in 2 or 3 where he can really showcase a more diverse game and become an impact player.
While he still has a ways to go in his development, this is why you see schools take guys like Devault more and more now in the hopes that it can develop from middle-of-the-road players to standouts.
